Watch straps: smelly

So I have the plum watch strap on mine, however I've noticed that the rubber has absorbed smells from my environment very easily, and I cannot get the scent out.
I was cooking onions the other day, and simply from wearing it while cooking (it's not even on the hand that was over the pan stirring), it seems to have permeated the strap very badly; this was three days ago.
I tried rubbing the strap with vinegar, however I didn't want to soak the strap parts for fear it would cause an issue with the metal components. I also tried rubbing/washing it with a mild detergent and hand soap. The hand soap seemed to mask it temporarily, however I've noticed the onion smell coming back out. 😕
Any ideas or suggestions?
Would baking soda be too abrasive if I rubbed with water and my finger tips a bit?

@Heidstirr Our Product Care page recommends using a "soap-free cleanser like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser or Aquanil" to help get rid of oils/lotions, so I'd recommend seeing if they help smells as well. I think the care page as a whole is a great resource you may be interested in!

Thanks @Rich_Laue, I wanted to try baking soda, but as mentioned above, I'm concerned about abrasiveness (as well as metal components in an acid like lemon juice or vinegar).
Not sure how some of those options would assist with a watchband....
