At https://www.fitbit.com/settings/privacy there is a setting for "steps and distance" that can be set to "private", "friends only" or "public"

I have gone to settings, privacy, steps and private, but I still see my steps along with the steps of my friends.    Do they see mine or not?   I thought my steps would disappear from the friends list... in other words, I would still see their steps but mine wouldn't be visible.

ok. I understand your question better now.

The privacy settings affects what data people see when they look at your profile.

The friends list 7-day step total is separate and I think that number will always be visible to your friends. There used to be a setting in your personal information section of the profile settings that allowed you to opt out of the friends ranking but that option was removed some while ago.

Why was it removed "some time ago?" I do not want to share ANY of my information with anyone...and who is defined as "friends" for the purposes of this app?? I have not listed any, nor do I intend to. A user should be allowed to set this to "private," based on HIPPA regulations.

@jgriffinmd you can change everything to private at https://www.fitbit.com/settings/privacy

The friends setting only affects those you have accepted as friends within the fitbit environment. As you don't intend to use the friends system then you can have all your data private.

edit: just found this help article on privacy that you may find of use: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1294#stats

No, one cannot "change everything to private" under privacy
settings...the "friends" selection is "friends only" or "public" (no
choice for just "private"), but since I do not intend on sharing
anything with friends, therefore choose no friends, then I am satisfied.
