I rarely get a notification when the battery is getting low on my Charge 5 and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when I do. I used to have a Charge2 which used to notify me when my battery was around 30%. My battery doesn't seem to last long at all, and I frequently find it's completely drained when I go to use it. It would be useful if the battery life was displayed on the main screen.

Hi, thank you for sharing that you've been experiencing this inconvenience with your battery level, @ShelaghG.
If you haven't done so already, you can force quit the app and reopen it to see the correct % within the Fitbit app. In addition, go to your Fitbit.com dashboard > Notifications > Remove the check mark for Low Battery > Sync your device to save the changes and the repeat the process to turn these notifications back on. Rest assured that the battery percentage displayed on your Fitbit device should always be accurate.
Regarding the battery that is draining too fast, it is recommended to follow the recommendations listed in this article to improve or extend battery life as well. There are a few features that would make the battery drain faster than usual, even in one day, like built-in GPS, Always On display, SpO2.
You can currently see the battery level on the display, but you need to swipe down from the main clock screen to see it.
