Hi, welcome to the Fitbit Community forums, @GeneI.
Thank you for sharing all these details about the inconvenience you've been having with your Charge 5.
There are a few general recommendations that are usually helpful with display issues, but you shouldn't find any problem after using it to swim, since the device should be water resistant to 50 meters. I've been informed that you already contacted the Customer Support team for further assistance with this. In this case, they will let you know how to proceed.
The best way to get help for this problem is to chat with us online or give us a call. You can click here to get connected.

@GeneI Thank you for sharing this update, it's good to know that you'll be receiving a replacement soon.
The device should be water resistant for up to 50 meters and it's designed to be swimproof and stand up to even the sweatiest of workouts. Keep in mind the water lock feature only helps to prevent the buttons on your tracker from activating while you're swimming.
See you around.
