I am travelling in Europ. The Fitbit seemed fine for the first week, but this moring it was dead. I hooked it up to for a recharge which seemed to go fine. But, with a 70% charge when I put it on, within 5 minutes the battery was dead again. How to handle this?

By returning it for a exchange or refund. The battery drain, due to one of thir updates, it's an ongoing issue for months already.
But otherwise, phone customer service and they will bring you through some steps, that many on this forum, clearly pointed out that they don't work
Good luck
