Has no idea how far I’ve walked/run (undercounts) or how many steps.
If I’ve worked to near exhaustion, my HR occasionally gets above Moderate zone. Although it’s usually impossible to even find that out.
On the road, always thinks I’ve gone further than I have.
Only a couple of reasons I will get another brand of tracker, while I continue to puzzle over the great reviews Fitbit gets.

Hi, @MVP2 Welcome back to the community.
Thanks for informing me about this situation in regards to the treadmill tracked by your Charge 5.
My best recommendation would be to double check. in this article, how to wear your Fitbit. Also, using the exercise app can really help you with this, try to initiate it manually.
Make sure to restart the Charge 5 before you attempt to use it once again, let me know how it goes!

What’s the exercise app?

@MVP2 The Exercise app is a feature on the Charge 5 device to let you track different exercises in detail (and use GPS for outdoor activities). Swipe left/right on the screen to find it. Here's a link to the relevant chapter in the Charge 5 manual - Exercise and Heart Health. It's also very important to make sure your arms move freely on a treadmill. Your Charge 5 won't count steps if you hold the rail with that hand.
