My friend’s brand new Charge 5 will charge properly in my USB charging port on the island in my kitchen, but my brand new Charge 5 will not. I have to plug the cable into an adapter and use a regular wall outlet. It’s a nuisance.

In your first post, I thought you were implying it was an issue with your Charge 5, but now your are saying it is the charging cable, right?

Now I see that is in the title; I just missed it in the text body.
Could try cleaning pins on charging cable:
I have no idea if Fitbit would replace for that if still in warranty. If not, you could buy a new from the Fitbit store for $20, or get a set of 2 third-party chargers for < $10 from Amazon if the trouble is worth it to you.

@MaggieWise, in addition to the cleaning procedure that @JohnnyRow suggested, make sure that the pins on the charge cable are not "stuck". Both are spring-loaded, so when you press them down with your finger they should pop back up and sit proud of the plastic back by roughly 2mm. If one doesn't pop back up, wiggle it a bit with the tip of your finger and see if you can free it. If it stays down, your charge cable is defective.
