FitBit thinks I'm swimming when I'm using an eliptical trainer

The automatic exercise tracking is very good for detecting when I'm out for a walk. Yesterday I went out for a walk around the block that I estimated to be 25 min long, then I hand watered plants using a watering can for around 10 minutes before going inside. FitBit said I had been walking for 26 min. - very good.

Unfortunately, it registers my workouts on an elliptical trainer as swimming and says I burned ~50 cal when the trainer (BowFlex Max) estimated 200 calories.

Can I fix this, or should I just switch to telling it when I start a workout? Are there any short instructional videos how to do either of these?

Hello @Rhyo9 and welcome to the Community.  You have two options to help track your elliptical workout correctly.

  • You can turn off swimming as an auto recognized exercise.  Some users have a gear in the upper right of their app and some have their profile picture/avatar.  Tap on that > Activity & Wellness > Exercise > Swimming > toggle it off.  A few users posted they got swimming logged when they were folding laundry.
  • Use the Exercise app on your Charge 5 with the Elliptical shortcut.

The accelerometer sees what it sees.  I've seen accelerometer tracings and I can understand why the device can get confused.
