Hello & welcome @MW54

You're right to expect more than 1.7 miles for 7000 steps. One thing to check is that your stride length is correct in the Fitbit app. To do this:

  • On the Today page, tap on your picture/icon in the upper left to open the Account page
  • Swipe up and tap on Activity & Wellness under Settings
  • Tap on Exercise
  • Tap on Stride Length
  • Confirm that your stride length for Walking & Running are correct. If not, deselect Set Automatically and enter your correct stride length
  • Tap on the arrows in the upper left to return to the Today page

Another thing to take into consideration is that our Fitbits will count arm movement as steps. So, you may see a lot of "steps" tracked yet not have the corresponding distance if those had been true steps. For example, My Charge 5 will track steps when I fold laundry or wash dishes.
