Every week I get a pretty accurate step count email from Fitbit. The thing my watch has been in my drawer since July. How does it know?

Hi @DroneXXX and welcome back to the forums.
Thank you for your message regarding the steps tracking.
This is due to the Mobile track feature. It is a service that allows you to count steps using your phone even if you forget to wear your Fitbit. If that is your case, Mobile track will add the steps recorded by your phone to the Fitbit app.
You can "unpair" Mobile Track from your account. On your Fitbit app, go to the upper left corner, on the phone and device icon. Click on your phone icon and choose "Disconnect device".

If you have added your phone as a fitbit device, fitbit takes your phone's step count when not wearing your fitbit and syncs to your phone. There is a neat fitbit term for this which I can never remember since I always wear mine - maybe mobile track or something like that.
