Welcome to the Fitbit App Gallery board @Tornada.ca! It's great to see you're interested in developing an app for Car's Keyless Entry. To learn more about developing apps for the App Gallery, see https://dev.fitbit.com/.

You can build any type of app, in accordance with Fitbit’s App Gallery guidelines, ranging from new clock faces to different types of exercise apps. Information from the watch's heart-rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, and GPS are all available to use.

To share an app with your family or friends, no app review is necessary. These private apps aren't available through the App Gallery, and you must directly provide the app's link to others.

To share an app publicly with Fitbit users, the app must be reviewed by the Fitbit team. The app is evaluated for its content and quality using our App Gallery Guidelines. Once the app is approved, it becomes available to all users through the App Gallery.

Good luck with the app! Woman Very Happy

If you are not too familiar with Fitbit OS app development, I suggest you start a brainstorming session here first to investigate the Minimum Viable Product.

Some roadblocks you should be aware of are:

  1. Fitbit OS third-party apps are unable to read or access the Bluetooth connection details meaning they cannot use Bluetooth to detect the presence of nearby Bluetooth devices like cars. If you need direct Bluetooth access you will need to work directly with the Fitbit OS team (hit them up on Twitter).
  2. Fitbit third-party apps cannot run in the background on the watch. Apps need to be manually opened and visible on the watch in order to work. In other words, for your keyless entry app to work, your users will need to manually launch the app to get it communicating. As such there is no way for the user to simply walk near the car within Bluetooth range and have the app launch automatically.
  3. Apps cannot communicate directly using Bluetooth but they can communicate with web servers over HTTPS and can detect the user's location with GPS (on the Fitbit Ionic) or detect the user's phone's location with the phone's GPS (on the Fitbit Versa). On a related note, apps can make IFTTT calls using IFTTT hooks.
