Sleep stages stopped reporting

Hi,

As of Monday 30th Sept 2024, my Fitbit premium app has stopped reporting the useful sleep data of “deep sleep”, “REM”, “light sleep” and “awake”. It now reports sleep, restlessness and awake. Totally useless data as far as I’m concerned as it now says I’m only asleep for a couple of hours a night and the rest is restlessness with a couple of minutes awake.

How do I get back the old format that was useful. If this is an update - it’s useless.

Hey there @a-level, welcome to the Fitbit Community.

There are a few scenarios where you might get your sleep pattern (which shows your time asleep, restless, and awake) instead of sleep stages:

  • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely. For best results, wear your device higher on your wrist (about 2-3 finger widths above your wrist bone). The band should feel secure but not too tight.
  • If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app (instead of simply wearing your device to bed). For more information on automatic sleep tracking, refer to How do I track my sleep with my Fitbit device?
  • If you slept for less than 3 hours.
  • If your device's battery is critically low.

I have this happen every now and then, usually if I forget to charge my watch, had issues sleeping, etc. but the only difference is on those days it doesn't have all the information, so it gives you the 3 categories instead.

It goes back to normal though, so I wouldn't be too worried 🫠

Thanks

I have had the same problem for the last few days and none of the reasons you mention are true. I haven't changed anything about the way I wear the watch or the time it's charged etc. So something else is at play here.

Hey there @ChrisFromNYC, thanks for joining this thread.

I really appreciate you sharing your situation with us. Let's work together to sort this out.

I'd like to know if you've recently changed the way you sleep? Certain sleep habits can affect the accuracy of sleep tracking. For example, if you used to sleep with your arm under your head or body.

As I mentioned, I haven't changed anything. I sleep just as I always do. This has been going on for the last six days with no explanation. The Fitbit app has simply changed the way it reports and now shows no REM, LIGHT, or DEEP sleep only AWAKE, RESTLESS, and ASLEEP. It also refuses to show me a sleep score and has no readiness score either. This all sucks and If it doesn't go back to the way it was before I'll drop my premium account and stop using Fitbit altogether. After all, what's the point? I have seen others with the same complaint on here. I am NOT the only one. This is a FITBIT ISSUE, not something on my end.

------------

I didn't mention it but the app also does not now show heart rate variability or breathing rate. It says no data. It also refuses to show a stress score. I am using an original Google watch.

Well, surprise surprise!! Today when I opened the app I was greeted by a page about a new update. I closed that and voila, all my stats are back and the sleep info is all working properly again. Once again, I didn't change anything so obviously it was something going on on Google/Fitbits end. Anyways, all is well once again. (for now)

Hello there @ChrisFromNYC, that great news!

I'm glad to read this got resolved by updating your app. I hope everyone gets the issue resolved the same way.

Keep me posted in case something else happens.

I'm in the same situation as Chris was - the sleep tracking since the end of September for me has been "basic" and missing data I had available at the start of last month and like them everything at my end has remained unchanged since I've purchased and setup my Google Pixel 2 watch in July.
I keep the apps on my watch and phone up-to-date and always at 80%+ when sleeping, the green light also works fine from the back of the watch. Fitbit app is v4.27 though I'm a free/non-premium account.

Any ideas why this would still be the case for me?

Hello!

Same situation here. I have fitbit premium and can't see my sleep score/ stage anymore. Only awake, sleeping. No change in my routine, watch is fully charged.

Is there a way to come back to the old version where we could see the stages?

Thanks!

I didn't do a thing to get things working again. One morning I opened the Fitbit app and it announced it had updated itself. After that, everything was working again. I didn't intentionally look for an update or initialize one, it just happened. Hopefully the same will be true for others suffering from these issues.

Hi all.  Same situation for me as of 10/8 and still not back working.  Have uninstalled and reinstalled the app.  Reconnected my watch, restarted my watch, tried manually editing my sleep to see if it would force it to calc a sleep score, all to no avail.

If anyone has any other ideas, would appreciate them being shared.

I don't know if anything I did made a difference but yesterday I got a sleep score.  Got one this morning, too.  Fingers crossed whatever happened stays in place!

Hello everyone,

Remember that your sleep data is influenced by both device/app settings and your personal sleep habits.

Im going to repeat myself but I didn't change any settings on my phone or my watch. I have fitbit premium and as for this morning, didn't get any sleep score again. That is really frustrating. It's really not accurate anymore with the new settings. Would love to get back to the old version where it was spot on and interesting.

Just like Tardifcl,
I'm going to repeat myself but I didn't change any settings on my phone or my watch, it was purchased and setup in July and the sleep section worked perfectly fine up until the end of September.
Last week my watch [Google Pixel2] did have updates to Fitbit and the ECG apps, though that made no difference. I 'am on Wear OS v4.0 and have since found out V5.0 has been put on hold.
So I'm unsure if the issue here lies with Google/Android or actually Fitbit apps/updates.

I ditto your comment. I've done everything recommended to get the multicolored graph back that showed what times I was in light/deep_REM.

I was offered a free year of premium when I purchased it and hadn't used it because all I wanted was the sleep graph. I finally signed up for premium thinking it might solve the problem. Nope. Same horizontal line with ugly brown and orange blobs.

Since, the sleep graph is the only reason I had fitbit, I'll have to look into a different company if I can't get the previous sleep graph.
