I've read that to sort some problems one has to restart the Flex by pushing something into a hole on the charger.

I think the charger I have must be generic as it doesn't have a hole.

Can I reset the device without buying another charger?

If your charger doesn't have the reset hole in the end that plugs into the power source, then no there is no way to restart. 

Search ebay or Amazon, several after market chargers are availible and will state that they will restart the device.
