Do I have to keep my phone with me when going for a walk/run to sync, or will it update my steps and route once I am back home and in range with my phone?

You do not need your phone with you for steps on a walk (or any activity); they will sync when get back in range of phone.

As for route, you would need your phone with you to use connected-GPS; i.e. connect to your phone's GPS but I'm not sure that is even possible with the Flex.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
