I did earn the Olympic shoe badge awhile back, but can't remember how many miles it took. Does anyone know what 100,000 steps equal in miles?

Actually that doesn't sound right.
Everyone on the walk should track the same distance but the number of steps will vary with shorter people taking more steps that taller people.
Fitbit calculates distance by multiplying your step count by your stride length. If your friend has overridden their default stride length then that could explain the different distances.

Thanks! I'm female and 5.2.
Interestingly enough, when I walk with friends my Fitbit often records more mileage than that of my friend. This explains why.

Hhhmmm.... But I do often register further distance than a friend while on same hike. Very strange, but what you say makes sense.
