Active calories burned

So my fitbit was requiring me to burn almost 3000 calories through activity.  That meant I had to hit 20,000 steps a day.  It meant a 30 minute run, 45 minute walk and a 20 minute walk or over 8miles in one day.  I just figured out how to set that calorie burn, but I'm wondering, why was that my default?  I have premium, my goal is to lose 1.5lbs a week and I typically eat 1500 calories a day.

You can change your calories burned goal in the app.

Hi @MagsOnTheBeach,

 

I believe that the default comes from your profile information (height, weight, gender) as well as your weight goal.

Work out...eat... sleep...repeat!

I can change them, however it doesn't really change - you can see I modified the calories, but one dashboard doesn't change, 3000 is still the goal linetarget.jpgactivity.jpg.

I've made my goal to lose 1.5lbs a week.  It's not extreme.

@MagsOnTheBeach: I think it correlates with your 1.5 lbs / week goal. Try to change that and see.

yep. Its based on your goal, your current weight, height and how much you want to lose per week. If you adjust the 1.5, it will adjust the calories. I don't know that I would worry that much about it. The key is to monitor in vs out. If on a daily basis you eat less and move more so you burn more than you intake, you should lose weight..

How do you reset a goal?  I keep changing it to 2500 and it keeps going back on its own to just shy of 3000.

I ended up chatting with fitbit and there is a problem. They said they would reset at midnight and it should be fixed.

Fitbit was wrong, the problem still exists. 😕

Now it is requiring almost 3300 to be burned, Fitbit help can't help, I just get the - it will reset overnight.  There is no way that walking 8 miles and running 2 miles doesn't meet my goal, but, apparently fitbit sees it as over 100 below my target.

I'd just reduce the intensity of your goal to 500 calories a day. The amount of exercise required at the present setting is probably a function of a constant error in the device counting calories burned.

If you have premium, did you tell fitbit you wanted to increase your activity level in the Trainer? I did when using the week trial and it put my daily cal burn target up ~300 cals per day.

@MagsOnTheBeachI have just come across this topic because I was looking for another issue with Premium. I see you are still a Premium user and congratulations on you weight loss..

 

Because it is 2 months since the last post here, have you now picked up that you can only alter your Calories Burned Goal through the Activity Cals tile..?  Result is BMR + Activity Cals Goal..= Calories Burned Goal

 

Because your Calories Burned Goal may still be at unreachable levels this table is a good guide to set that Calories Burned Goal. When you do, you will probable exceed your Trainer cals by  a significant margin.   Just multiply your BMR by a factor = Calories Burned Goal Estimate.  Use this BMR calculator which uses the same equations that Fitbit uses and the result is 10 calories higher than Fitbit for me..

 

The end result for me has been an effort factor of 1.6...by dividing my BMR into the Calories Burned Goal.

 

Sedentary.  Little to no regular exercise. (factor 1.2)
Mild activity level: Intensive exercise for at least 20 minutes 1 to 3 times per week. This may include such things as bicycling, jogging, basketball, swimming, skating, etc.  If you do not exercise regularly, but you maintain a busy life style that requires you to walk frequently for long periods, you meet the requirements of this level.  (factor 1.375)
Moderate activity level: Intensive exercise for at least 30 to 60 minutes 3 to 4 times per week. Any of the activities listed above will qualify.    (factor 1.55)
Heavy or (Labor-intensive) activity level: Intensive exercise for 60 minutes or greater 5 to 7 days per week (see sample activities above).  Labor-intensive occupations also qualify for this level.  Labor-intensive occupations include construction work (brick laying, carpentry, general labor, etc.). Also farming, landscape worker or similar occupations.     (factor 1.7)
Extreme level: Exceedingly active and/or very demanding activities:  Examples include:  (1) athlete with an almost unstoppable training schedule with multiple training sessions throughout the day  (2) very demanding job, such as shoveling coal or working long hours on an assembly line. Generally, this level of activity is very difficult to achieve.  (factor 1.9)
