Trying to find my best ever steps day but my dashboard just comes up with spinning wheel of death. How can I find out ?

Do you have a daily step badge, like one of the 20K or 30K ones?  That will tell you the date you last achieved that step badge, then you can search for the date inside the dashboard to see exactly how many steps you had that day.

You should be able to see this in your profile, under Achievements.
