Bored at work? Burn some calories!

Hi everyone!

Want to know a great way to stay in shape and burn calories while at work?

So, I based this thread off of one of our awesome work days here at Fitbit. Every Wednesday our office celebrates Work Out Wednesdays. (WOW)! On Wednesdays, we come to work mentally and physically prepared to work it out! We focus on a specific workout for that day. The best part is that it can be done in any office! Like this week, we're doing push ups to increase endurance and strength. We start off with 10 pushups and then increase by 5 every hour. If you're wondering, yes, it gets really tough after lunch but, its a GREAT way to keep burning calories, relieve stress at work AND it only takes a minute or two to do! Who knows, maybe you can get your office or a group to participate in a wourkout sesh like this?!

What other workouts are simple, fast and can be done at work to burn calories and stay fit!? Please share and join us tomorrow for WOW! #westartat9am :smileywink:

Squats are good for stretching and strengthening. I do 20 squats 2x on MWF with about 3 lb weights. The whole older adult class does them and they are in the 65- 80 yr. range with a few even older.

We mostly dance for aerobics as well as stretch and light weight lift. It puts a spring in our steps.

I think that I made 39 stair reps one day according to Fitbit.

Now up off my duff and down stairs to wash clothes.

I like all the ideas for staying active at work. I walk when I'm on the phone at home to add steps.

I love this! What a great idea :).

I work in a gym so of course there are tons of options to get a work out before or after your shift. During shift at the desk we keep free weights, small medicine balls and ankle weights that everyone is welcome to share. We each kind of bring in our favorite from home.

I imagine that working at a gym is a constant reminder to be in shape and probably you always have someone to challenge. Smiley Very Happy

I have a desk job and in the morning - I hit the treadmill or power walk - 10,000 steps - then I rebound - 5,000 steps - on days when I am weight training - I stay in the gym and get those 10,000 steps - then I head to desk job - I park in the last spot - and get some steps in before I hit my desk - I go between floors instead of taking the elevator - our law firm has three floors - instead of using interoffice mail - I walk to each department when I gather a pile of documents on my desk - I sometimes walk outside for 1/2 hour and get another 5,000 steps - I get up and hit the water machine at least a good six times a day too - I get at least a good 20,000 steps a day with a desk job - but remember I rise early with my workout buddies.

I am always looking for little ways to get in a few steps middle of day. The printer behind my desk is shared with all the surrounding offices, so I will deliever everyones pages to them as they come. I offer to do the coffee run. I wander the building occassionally just to see if there is anything that needs to be done, and I will dust. I know it isn't running a marathon but it gets me up out of my seat!

I have a desk job that doesn't require me to get up very often.  I typically don't even take a lunch.  Not moving for 9-10 hours a day is harder on your body then you think as I'm sure some of you "desk-workers" are aware of.  So, what I have started doing is forcing myself to get up every hour.  It sounds kind of silly and it's embarassing when co workers catch me doing it but they already know I'm a little goofy, but I step in place for 50 steps at my desk (I do this everytime I get up).  I then make my way around the office, walk up the stairs and back down, walk around to the other offices.  I then come back to my desk and step in place for 50 steps.  I get in 500+ steps doing this, takes just a couple minutes.  I will also step in place 200 times when I use the restroom and I have stopped using emails and the phones to communicate with others in the office, I get up and go talk to them.  Again, I know this sounds silly but it gets my blood flowing, I'm not as tired throughout the day, have increased my work steps from 1000-2000 to 5000-6000 and I actually find that I get more work accomplished.  I have thought about bringing some weights in and adding that to my hourly routine.

I'm hoping everyone is taking notes on these awesome ideas to keep your blood pumping at work! Keep those ideas coming! With our new Fitstar integration, we've been adopting new routines to do at work during Work Out Wednesdays! The ab workout is killer, so make sure to check it out!

Also, check out this article that helps provide a little bit more assistance with getting those steps in at work!

@sammy7 That's such a great idea! It feels great to walk off lunch and clear your head before you dive into work again!

@Saisha That's what I'm talkin' about! It's looking like your having a bit of fun and it seems like you're creating a closer connection with your co-workers since you're seeing them face to face than email. Great suggestions!

@BelleLeeGhetti Another great way to create a stronger relationship with your co-workers and at the same time get your steps in for the day! I wish we had one of you in our office!

@Jabrat The Red Tennis Shoe Group on Facebook is HUGE! Good job. You're a force to be reckoned with! Smiley Happy

Hi everyone! Here's a few things I do to keep my steps up.

  1. My company has a large office building that takes up an entire block, so every hour I get up and take a lap around my floor. It takes like five minutes or less and I get an extra 400-500 steps.
  2. Eat your lunch at your desk while you work, then take a walk right after. Sometimes I walk for my full hour and get about 6k steps.
  3. When I'm home and dont feel like going for a walk (or going anywhere at all) instead of just sitting down and being a couch potato, I use the same technique; every hour I get up and march in place or step from side to side for about 10 minutes - you get about 1000 steps each time. Hope these simple techniques help!

Been using the washroom a couple of floors down at work to get my steps. Today someone from that floor asked me ''did you switch floors? I see you alot down here''. ... I guess its time I go 1 floor lower!

I work as a security guard in a ten story building, I have been working up to pyramids on the stairs.

Essentially, everytime I need to ascend one floor to do a patrol, I go up to 10 and back down to 2, up to 10 and back down to 3, up to 10 and back down to 4, etc. I haven't completed a pyramid yet, but my calves tell me it's working.

Whether you have a desk job or one that allows some movement during the day you can always do a series of isometric exercises while you are working for almost any part of your body and no one would even know.  A google search would give you many websites to use to make a plan.  It couldn't be much easier.

"I work at a hotel and unfortunately guests never take the stairs. So my coworker and I started a game where we will run up the stairs to the top floor and down. "

I completely support an organization that does this consistently.

It's great role models for me.
