Daily recommendations on caffeine intake

What is a safe recommendation of caffeine to have a day. I normally have the supplement called amino energy. I take 100mg in the morning to wake up and then I take 125mg before my workout. So I average anywhere from 225mg - 275mg in a day which is probably equivalent to 2 1/2cups of coffee a day. Is this a safe amount of caffeine to have in a day?

Caffeine: How much is too much? Caffeine has its perks, but it can pose problems, too. Find out how much is too much and if you need to curb your consumption.

By Mayo Clinic staff

If you rely on caffeine to wake you up and keep you going, you aren't alone. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, alleviating fatigue, increasing wakefulness, and improving concentration and focus.

When to consider cutting back

For most healthy adults, moderate doses of caffeine — 200 to 300 milligrams (mg), or about two to four cups of brewed coffee a day — aren't harmful. But some circumstances may warrant limiting or even ending your caffeine routine. Read on to see if any of these apply to you.

You drink 4 or more cups a day

Although moderate caffeine intake isn't likely to cause harm, too much can lead to some unpleasant effects. Heavy daily caffeine use — more than 500 to 600 mg a day — may cause:

  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Stomach upset
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Muscle tremors

@BobBush74 Welcome to our Fitbit Community. I totally agree with @ecd60 since caffeine can cause a few health problems if we consume high doses. I had to quit the caffeine intake for a while since it made my blood pressure to go up. I thought it was another problem but my doctor told me to quit it and a week later, my blood pressure started to get lower.

If you haven't felt any effect with the amount of cups you drink a day, it's fine but I wouldn't recommend to consume more than that.

Hi @BobBush74  Caffeine is a very odd thing. Some people seem to tolerate very little - like me! Others tolerate much more. If you sleep well then you are probably tolerating it well. But as@JuanJoFitbit said, it can affect your health and wellbeing, so keep an eye on sleep, blood pressure,  and any heart arythmias, which can often be affected by caffeine (among other things)
