Desk sitting

I sit all day at a desk, if I leave for lunch someone is always looking for me.  What can I do inside an office for exercise.  Sometimes literally hours pass before I get up.

wake up early before you go to work and make the time - I try to do 20000 in the morning and some at lunch and at night for about an hour during weeknights - weekends are a different story - I step quite a bit more

Although I like my job, I would love a non desk job. I just cannot find one that I like.

Accounting work typically means sitting.

What do you do that you do not have a desk job?

Interesting article recently about sitting for long periods at work.  see link

Hi Gerri,

I hated desk sitting so much I decided to pursue my passion for baking. That was an amazing way to stay in shape without going to the gym much. On your feet for at least 8 hours, usually with lots of heavy lifting in a hot environment. As long as you stayed away from the products....

However, the money and hours were terrible so I am back to administrative work. At least working at home if I decide to get up and do jumping jacks no one looks at me strangely. But when I worked at an office I invented excuses to go get things, and drank tons of water or tea which required lots of bathroom breaks, which doubled as mental health breaks.

I do the exact same thing, i.e., find reasons to get things and drink lots of water (I always go to the bathroom on the third floor - gotta get those stairs in); glad I'm not the only one.

I have a desk job as well.  I get a lot of walking in becuase I walk to work, home for lunch, back to work and then home again.  However, in the office I have started to mix it up to get more steps (stairs). First, I started to make a point to get coffee / water / ect on other floors.  I also will take the LONG way around to get to the restroom which could included going up or down a flight of stairs.  I kinda make a game out of it.  Second, I found a group of folks that I work with that will walk the stairs (14 flights) once or twice a day.  It takes about 20 minutes but everyone is due a 20 minute health break right?

Love the 20 minute health break comment.  Sure wish my work had more flights (sadly just three)

If smokers can take a smoke break.  Walkers can take a stretch break.  Seems only fair.

The doors between floors are locked in our building so I get off bus one stop before mine to get extra lap in.

I walk on lunch that helps too

So true about the smokers getting their break no question! Fitness breaks make perfect sense 🙂

Regarding people thinking you're crazy for staying so hydrated you needed a ton of washroom breaks, my former supervisor routinely nursed a coffee all day, had no water and ate a high sodium packaged meal at lunch, then was amazed that I'd been up at least a dozen times and her not even once. Her other theory was that you needed to balance high salt with high sugar...

Definitely find ways to get up more. Guzzle water so you'll have to get up to use the restroom. When no one is looking, I go run up and down a few flights of stairs!

I have been watching a motivational fitness dvd its not a exersize dvd moreso the physcology behind fitness and it states that we sit 89% of our waking lives. it suggested a stand up desk so i got one and the first hour standing up was i really sweating? yes! then it got a bit easier but still standing up for more than a hour at a time is a strain so i go from standing to siting to standing again.. it works and is much more healthy than just sitting all day.

Wow that is so cool! That is great your company supported that idea .
I think the fitbit really made me see how inactive we can be. I think because I have always worked out hard I thought that was enough. I realized that is one hour in 24.

You are really progressive in this standing desk idea good for you !
I find that people that are into fitness and wellness tend to criticize the others. I figure I must be doing something right I feel good!

Artsyman, I agree that is so great that your company went for it. I've done something similar at home. It may not be "exercise", but it's way better than sitting!

I love the idea of a standing desk; several of my colleagues use them and absolutely love it.  And like you said, they alternate back and forth between standing and sitting.  Great post!
