FYI July 2023 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Hey Fitbitters! For Your Information … we are halfway through 2023, and it is time to sign up for another monthly challenge. Also, if you happen to see this for the first time mid-month, jump on in; there is no need to wait for another challenge to start next month.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

I’ve got three ideas for pictures this month. 1. July — at least one picture of July, wherever you live. 2. A reflection. 3. A Silhouette.

Hot JulyHot July

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

That looks like it was a great July 4 pool party @jantonini

Welcome @BASILCHIVES -- looks like you are doing pretty good with two bad knees. My wife got a knee replacement last year -- after a couple of years of PT and a couple cortisone shots. Once it got to the point where she couldn't walk the dog around the block she finally got a knee replacement. It's a big deal, but it was definitely the right decision for her.

I'm afraid I have temporarily crippled myself. I got off a ladder and rolled my ankle and it really hurt! Hopefully not too long before I can walk normally again Lol

Oh no, @NellyG !! Sending positive vibes your way for fast healing!

Best Answer

Feel better @NellyG. I'm a bit fearful of ladder falls and get stressed every time I climb up and down the one I use to get to the loft/storage area in my garage. It seems an odd fear that, given that I'm on a unicycle almost every day. But I'm already pretty close to the ground on the unicycle so I guess I'm less worried about breaking something.

I've had a few rolled ankles in the past (swelling doubled the size), and they seem to take months to fully heal, But I've managed to avoid crutches and it usually doesn't affect bike exercise, so there's that.

So my iPhoto program thinks these are "Wineberries" a species of berry native to China and Korea. But they are all over Maryland this time of year and I'll often stop on my bike rides for a snack. We just call them wild raspberries

@BASILCHIVES -- that mountain lake looks beautiful, and refreshing. Where's it at?

According to my bike computer, the temp was 105F in downtown Baltimore on my ride home this afternoon. That's about 10F higher than the official temp, but I think it was correct because the asphalt absorbs and reflects the heat so well.

I've updated to two days ago, as I now have to revise my targets.  My left knee has obviously felt a bit left out of all the care given to the right knee, and has now mounted a takeover bid.  So my next post will show quite a few things scaled down.  Going uphill is much the same, but coming down anything more than the slightest gradient is bad news.  Walter is being very understanding. 🙂
