Did you mean:

Feed the snake!

I read this phrase a while ago in an earlier post. It stuck in my mind and the beginning of a new year seems the perfect time to bring it up again. I was not able to find the original posting so cannot give the author credit. Sorry.

But here is the idea, with an embellishment of my own.

I went out shopping yesterday and bought a new calendar at half off. Every day I make my step goal, I will color in that day. As the original poster mentioned, as you color the days, it starts to look like a snake. The more days you color, the longer the snake. So, each day you meet your step goal, you "feed the snake."

Here is my added part. As much as I would like to believe that I can meet my step goal every day, in my heart I am afraid of setting myself up for failure and discouragement. So my New Year's resolution is to meet my WEEKLY goal, planning for the days I may fall short by doing a little extra each day. And even if I fall short of my daily step goal, as long as I meet my weekly goal, I can color in the week, feeding the snake. I love the idea of a visual presentation of my progress.

What do you think? Anyone else ready to start feeding the snake? For those just starting out, set a lower goal, maybe 7,000 steps/day. Once you start seeing the success on your calendar, up your goal a thousand at a time until you are at least 10,000 steps/day. Happy New Year to us!!

Personally I feel like If I make my step goal every day, it isn't high enough. Granted, I'm just starting out and my goal right now is only 5000. My problem has more to do with time and motivation than my fitness level, and changing my lifstyle is my true goal, and that stuff takes time. But I figure once I can consistenly meet my goal for a week or so, I'll be bumping it up.  I think my calendar would look pretty bad!

As a visual sort of person though, I do like the idea of having a visual representation of each month looking back at you every day.  🙂

I have something like this from last year. (just got my fitbit so my calendar was just marked with workouts not steps). Starting in Jan of 2013 I wrote everywork out in green glitter pen.  Every dog walk, run, p90x, insanity, weight lifting workout...On days that I didn't work out I put a big purple X. I got the same calendar this year and on Christmas day I flipped thru 2013 reminding myself how my year went. Love seeing the green.  Hate seeing the purple X's.
