Foot Injury

7 months ago I injured myself at work and my Fitbit journey stopped....walking was painful. 4 months into treatment I was sent for a specialized assessment with a few practitioners at the hospital and that night could not even bare putting my foot on the floor...10 weeks in an aircast and an MRI later I was told they weren’t sure how to treat my injury but let’s take the cast off and try something else. I miss the challenges and competing with friends...slowly trying to get a few more steps every day without pushing too hard. Would love to make friends with some people to help me to push through and keep going. If anyone else out there needs motivation I am here to help as well

I was living in a very rural area when I broke the joint in the middle of my foot about 10 years ago. It was very late at night so I immediately put it in a jell ice pack.  It was not swollen at all the next morning but I could not put any weight on it. I got somebody to take me to the local ER where 2 nurses (quacks) insisted that they had to get my lower leg/foot at at 90 degree angle. As I was screaming in pain as they did so they called an orthopaedic surgeon ( another quack). He gave me the option of a removable splint or a cast. I then got one of my friends to take me to a real orthopaedic doctor in Atlanta, GA  USA  where I usually receive medical attention. The real doctor told me the nurses did a lot of damage by forcing my foot to a 90 degree angle ( particularly because just after they did so it swelled like a basketball). He fitted me with a better removable splint. I had a really old Nordic Trac ski exerciser at home. I used it about an hour a day to get my exercise. It did not bother my foot which took 6 months to heal. Every night I used  warm water (not hot) in a foot bath alternating with ice. After about 6 months I was able to run  10 miles a day as usual.

I had a foot injury at work in August and it really sidelined me and my activities.  I was able to walk so I just walked less.  Eventually, I can run again, but my foot still swells, looks bruised and is tender at the end of the day.  No advice, just empathy.  They want to release me, but I'm not sure what to do, there is no more improvement but it isn't normal.

Actually even though I was able to run about 6 month after I broke my foot, it did swell for a while after that. The best thing I found for that was to ride the a minibike for about 5 or 10 minutes every hour. I would not let them close the claim until you are satisfied since this is probably covered under workers comp.

Sounds like we both are having a similar experience. Sorry to hear that

Yes it is covered. I will see my doctor later this week and will be asking what is next. Not happy to settle with not sure. Send me to a specialist or try another treatment, unsure but I can’t be the only person this has ever happened too, there is an answer

The discoloration and swelling did last quite a while. I could use the Nordic Trac while I was recovering and it did not aggravate my foot. When my doctor cleared me to run again it did not hurt either. My toes remained somewhat black and blue and the swelling did continue for a while. It has been so long I can't give you an exact time line.  I did keep icing my foot every day too for quite a while at the end of the day.. Best wishes that everything gets resolved.

@CathleenC I have no advice but full on empathy. I have issues with my left foot just from over use and the days it acts up are sad for sure. I couldn't even imagine what you are going through. I hope whatever it is they diagnose it and make you whole again. Hugs.

Hello there! I hear you....
My name is Tiziana and I am a former dancer with a permanent foot injury....long story....
Bottom line....I had to start swimming and lift small weights...
I miss long walks, hiking and those 10,000 steps or more a day, but in the end, there are many other ways to stay fit. How is your ankle/foot doing? I am with you on this one...hope you get better...

Sorry to hear a out your injury, although I am glad you have found other ways to be active. 👍🏻 I am going for a nerve conduction test In January, maybe that will give us some answers. I have been referred to a sports medicine therapist for my next doctor to try and find a solution. Hopefully 2018 brings a solution. Having the pain stop would be awesome

CathleenC:  I'm going out on a limb here, sorry for the pun, but it sounds like a classic case of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy.  What ever injury you had should be well healed by now, but you still have pain.  RSD can occur when an injury to the wrist/hand or foot/ankle is immobilized too long and in the case of the foot/ankle, weight bearing is limited or not allowed for an extended period of time.  I urge you to Google Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy to learn about the causes and treatments.  As a Physical Therapist for 38 years, my advise to you is to begin weight bearing as soon as possible and to encourage movement of the foot and ankle as much as possible.  There are exceptions to every rule and this goes against two of my hard and fast rules, listen to your body and never train through pain.  The longer you do not bear full weight on your foot and limit movement the longer you will suffer.  Good luck!

Thank you for your feedback and I will look into that for sure. I am willing to explore all options. I have been out of the aircast since early October and have had mild improvement. I have been in Physio care twice a week since April of 2017, I will mention this to him. We have tried dry needling as well. I am having a nerve conduction test this month, the sports medicine specialist thinks it is nerve related.

I had a foot injury one month ago at work. My doc insisted on buying a knee stabilizer. I knew the importance of wearing a knee brace when I read a valuable article on https://dunbarmedical.com/product-category/orthopedic-bracing-support/knee-brace-support-splint/ But it's hard to wait for the pain to pass. I miss as well the long runs and walking in the park. So, I feel you, girlie. I can't wait to take off my knee brace and start running again. I hope the rehabilitation won't take more than one month. I already feel tingling in my feet. LOl, I'm a child who can't wait to eat dessert.
