Neither.
I think people do what they enjoy the most.
I know people that run Ultras. They dont impress me either. They like what they do. I like what I do.

Also depends on what lift you mean by "lift". Cause a 50kg woman overhead pressing her bodyweight would yes be tons more impressive than a 100kg guy deadlifting that same weight.
But comparing distance with lifting and impressing a stranger - that would depend on the inclinations of said stranger I suppose.
When regards to someone lifting (as I am more familiar with that) - spot-on form with light weight is way more impressive to me than heavy weight with snap-city form and/or tiny range of motion.

For me - and this is only for me - I think the running. The reason being I've done very little weight lifting, have forgotten what I did know, and therefore no matter what someone could do they'd likely get a blank stare from me. Whereas with the running, while I never ran much I did walk a lot and do know that a 13 mile run would be a nice achievement. But I think also - again, this is just me, but being able to cover 13 miles efficiently is a useful skill. In case civilization breaks down and we need you to fetch medical supplies from the next town while dodging zombies, I guess, I don't know. But just being able to run for a bus is good.

It's totally an individual thing. We're all different ages and fitness abilities. For someone who has had a desk job and zero exercise for years, two blocks daily is impressive for them. Being able to hike or run thirteen miles is less impressive for a twenty five year old than for a sixty year old...although you certainly applaud them both.

Me? I'm really impressed when someone finds something they really love to do, and I see them give it their all.
So if you can slog along on the treadmill for 10 hours solid 7 days a week, I'm not impressed. I think it's sad.
But if you love to trail run and have made it your joy in life to get out there every weekend for 4 hours or more, and you train a couple of days during the week with the anticipation of running farther and farther into the middle of the wilderness, then I'm impressed. You've found something that makes you healthy and brings you joy. And that's a win.

what impresses me most is consistency.
I know so many people who are expert at starting exercise programs or at losing weight. Some bodies do distance better and some do weight better and some do speed better, none do stopping and starting exercise well. We are like airplanes, the most dangerous part of a flight is take off and of an exercise program is the first 12 weeks. So impress me, keep changing up what you do and make it a lifetime regimen. 🙂
