Please. I have asked this question all over and searched and no one seems to know. How do I delete steps it added that weren't there? I have like 5000 extra steps today that I did not take. I'm on Android if that makes a difference.

ONLY walking and running manually added overwrites "steps" that were actually seen, and then it's overwritten by steps calculated based on miles gone.
Calories will be replaced, yes, by your activities.
Your problem now it's after midnight, the prior day is locked.
Unless you go change the settings in Fitbit regarding your time-zone to somewhere NOT past midnight.
But I don't know what will happen adding 2 activities for exact same period of time. Guessing it may work.
Considering how many people cheat to get as many non-steps counted as steps to reach goals, you've likely just interested many in attempting an equestrian hobby now.

Need to manually add a walking entry for the start and duration of time that will take care of those non-steps, so hopefully they are clustered, for 0.01 mile.
That will cause a calculation based on your stride length of how many steps to do that 0.01 mile, which should be minimal.
And since it will cover the time of the erronuous steps, it'll wipe out it's records with the manual figures.

I got credit for 9180 steps while I was sleeping and the fitbit was on my dresser...

So, how do you delete that? Seems like it happens to a lot of people and I don't want "cheat" steps on my tracker.

@HeybalesThank you, but it didn't change the number of steps. It still shows 1700+ then 1800+ then another 300+......It added another 24 steps for that .01 miles. And, now it also added MORE calories to my overall burn for the day which I know is inflated. Why can't I just go hit an edit button and delete them? It just seems ridiculous that it can't be that simple.

How long did you say the walk took? It should have wiped out whatever it saw, it always does when you manually log walking/running workouts.
And where does it show 1700, and then 1800, and then 300?
Do you actually have some manual activities already logged?
It's not easy, because it would also probably allow ones to cheat on adding steps.

It was a 45 minute period of time that I was riding my horse. I logged it as a horseback ride-trotting. Shouldn't it have eliminated those steps? When I go to the detail for steps, it shows those in the incremental readings.... what is it like every 5 or 10 minutes.

Well, I don't care what others do with their step counts. They have to look at themselves in a mirror and its not a competition anyway. I want an accurate record of MY steps and I could get that with a free app on my phone that allowed me to go in and edit it if my phone ran off with my toddler.
I also wanted a FITNESS tracker, not just a pedometer. How do I use this as that? How do I measure my level of activity through the day with the variety of exercise I do? Take it off every time its not walking/running?

Actually, there are several that do it exactly as you say.
The activity trackers are NOT fitness trackers, they can be really accurace for 85-95% of your day's activity, depending on how much exercise you do.
Walking and running they can be decent on. Other exercise they are more likely to underestimate, more they are non-step based, more they are under-estimating.
So several do remove their daily activity tracker (as they view it), and log their exercise separately, using HRM or database entries. Because they indeed want to see how daily activity goals are reached and exceeded, and want their exercise separate.
All my exercise is separate, just because it's intense enough or wrong enough I have to for best calorie count. If my deficit becomes too great, not good.

Where's the Drive function, please? Are you using a Charge 3? Can't find it in my phone app or online dashboard. It would be so much easier if it was possible to turn off the pedometer function, for example, when driving. I managed to get quite a few thousand steps in today just sitting behind the wheel.

OK, just found it and figured out how to delete false steps. Might make this thing a bit better, but would still be easier if it could just be turned off.
