um its a challenge thats why we concern ourselves with what our other team members are doing ... isnt that the point ... to try your best and win the race.    i think this is a very valid question ... i too was looking how to get in more steps to keep up with my fitbit challengers ... i was told they use their treadmill .... when i did that wow much bigger numbers (no where near 50 000 but up in the 20ks which i would have never  gotten if i had not asked this very question)

if people in my group have crazy high numbers then great for them - i concern my self with who ever i am closest to in numbers and try and pass 🙂 at the end of the day i am more in shape 🙂 lol or i hope.

we should never put down someones questions 🙂 or answers ...

we are a supportive community ...

go go go step step step ... have fun !!

Thank you for this reply !!!  you answered my question ...

i also do this ... sit for a bit then get up and get in some steps ... ends up giving me higher numbers at the end of the day ... and if i am a little behind in a challenge i do a little workout or two to catch up 🙂   its all for healthy fun.

lol well i dont average that (i am at about 15 a day ... highest was 26 k )

but i can see those that do 50 can have fun too 🙂 if they are doing it i assume its because they like stepping.

more healthy to me than my little 10 - 15k

but i see what you mean .. too much not better either.

🙂

Anecdotal evidence suggest many (most?) of the folks report 50,000 or more steps on a daily basis are employing a bit of larceny.  😛

I doubt these people do not realize the long range effects they are doing to their bodies, specifically joint, tendon and ligament damage, but when they do it will be TOO late!  Too bad I'm no longer a practicing Physical Therapist because I would have job security for a long time!

could be your right ...

but since i can not change what they are doing (or not actually doing)  i can only try to get as many steps as *i* can for the day...

you can count on my numbers being honest 🙂

i hope one day i have a crazy day and make it to 50 000 lol but for now ... i am happy with 10-25k 🙂

tips that i found helpful to keep my numbers up.

- treadmill workout ..

- getting up every hour and getting in a few hundred steps (that often turns into more)

- having a schedule so that it doesnt interfere with my work.

- walking to where ever i can walk.

- having a little after supper walk with family (oh this is wonderful)

any other tips 🙂

probably shaking it while watching TV - doesn't seem possible; I just try to get my 5 miles; that's about 11,000 steps... Marathon every day maybe?  haha

Even a Marathon every day will not get you that far.  Think about it this way, most amature marathon runners typically log between 1,500 and 1,700 steps per mile, that in turn equates somewhere between 39,300 and 44,540 steps during a race.

At the beginning of this month I did a 20 mile charity walk. I managed to maintain a very quick pace. For me that's anything above 3.8 mph. It took 5 hours. I somehow hit 50k. The walk was on the 5th. Today is the 27th. Today is also The first day I have been able to do much of anything walkwise.
How one can sustain a pace like that everyday is hard to see.
I don't want to discount the possibility that someone can do it but is it healthy? There is such a thing IMHO too much of a good thing.
I would like to hear from someone that walks all day for a living share their knowledge.
Perhaps a mail carrier?

@paso, we've had some folks check in who were in the midst of significant events such as hiking across Italy and hiking the Appalachian Trail.  For someone in the midst of such an effort I can see 50,000 steps per day; for someone with a job, a family, and other responsibilities, I'm thinking there is a certain level of fraud when reporting 50,000 steps in a day.

I walk all day long (I'm an engineer) at work, only sitting down for scheduled breaks.  I pace when there's nothing to do or I'm waiting for someone.  It's all about constant movement.  Today, a Saturday, I'll hit 40,000 steps.  How I do that is:  3 1/2 hours on the treadmill at various times (a pair of one hour sessions at the gym, and 90 minutes at home), 14 miles on my bicycle (which gives me about 5,000 or so steps), and generally moving around to get to those locations.  It's hard, and I'm on a current weight loss program, but hardly impossible.  You just have to try.  The level of "Well I can't do it, so it must be fraud" in this thread is rather disgusting.  You just have to try.

I never said I couldn't do it; what I said was most folks with a real life are commiting fraud when the report 50,000+ steps day in and day out.

Hi Shipo, As I said I only managed it once was was wiped out for 3 weeks. Couldn't get back to my old routine. Also I retired at 42 so I have the time but as I said before only once have I ever been in that range. It was over twice my daily average plus the 5 hrs.of walking stats were added to my regular numbers for the a.m. plus my sorry sad crippled trek back to the parking lot. No fraud involved.

Nor did I imply any fraud on your part; my comments were directed to many of the folks (but not all) who report 50,000+ steps on a day to day basis.  As the old saying goes, "Extradorinary claims require extraordinary proof."  I don't consider 50,000 steps on any give day at all extraordinary.

Edit: I think I might need to qualify that last statement; I do think 50,000 steps in a day is quite an accomplishment, and one worth bragging about; I also think one day in a row at that step count is either "doable" or "work-up-to-able" for most folks given enough time.  I say this as a way of letting you know my final comment above is not to slight your accomplishment in any way.

Thanks Shipo! My one day stay will probably my finest and that's ok👌 I know I 'did' it but know it's not something I need to do again. I would rather have my 3 week recoup time back.
In all honesty I am more impressed by my friends who started w a 1,000 a day step goal and are hitting 10x that. That's amazing. Happy trails☀

I totally agree, people who average 50k steps a day have NO IDEA what they are doing to their joints and feet.  You stated it took you 3 weeks to recouperate, I can believe it.  Those that continue with their obsessive/compulsive behaviors will eventually pay a price.  Once the damage is done it's can't be repaired by the body, but Orthopedic surgeons will be happy to oblige.

I wonder if they wear out thier Fitbit fast. I had gotten so I've been averaging 20K steps per day and my FItbit HR came apart under the digital screen here after 8 months of use. I had to wrap it in tape to kind of keep it working till I got a new one. Killed my nice average since I didn't notice till the end of the first day that it died after 8.5K steps.
