So, I realize the original post here may be pretty old, but just wanted to chime in as I recently hit 50,000 for the first time this week. I'm a mom of 3, I work in special education during the week, and it's pretty common for me to hit between 15,000 and 20,000 steps just from work and daily activity. I run/jog/walk as part of my fitness plan. I've been a fitbit wearer for a good little while, and if there is a way to cheat the system, then I'm unaware of it. I simply did a little math and made a plan. 50,000 divided by 10 is 5,000 steps every hour for 10 hours, or around 2.5 miles. I can do 2.5 miles by jogging or walking around the house in around 30-35 minutes. I get in my 5,000 and then I get to sit or do other things for the other 30 minutes or so left in the hour. It IS possible to do it without cheating, it just requires a plan, a goal, and a commitment to making the steps. It's not something I do day in and day out and I was whooped when I finally finished it. However, having been a person who earned her badge, and knowing that I'm not now, nor will I ever be, the fittest of the fit, I have a hard time assuming that someone is cheating somehow because they did something that was hard for me and may be legitimately impossible for another. We can only do what our own bodies can do, but don't snuff someone else's candle out to feel like you're shining brighter!

@theresa1011, I don't think anybody here has called even a single person who achieved a one-off 50,000 step day a cheater; that many steps in a day is certainly doable.  The flip side is when folks claim 50,000 steps per day, every day, with no supporting story or documentation; those I have no problem tagging as cheaters.

@theresa101  I agree reaching 50,000 steps in a day is doable once or twice, but anyone who claims they do it everyday is living in a fantasy world.  Anyone who claims 50k steps is easy is lying.  I still can't understand why anyone would want to, is it making them healthier?  A recent article in time stated that exercising 150 minutes per week would be enough improve one's health without harming themselves.  I average between 250 and 285 minutes a week utilizing 45 minutes on an ellipital, stationary bike and a rower plus weight lifting 2 days per week.  My health is good and have suffered no injuiries because I listen to my body.  As a retired Physical Therapist with 38 years experience I have repeatedly warned those who claim to log 50K steps on a daily basis that they will in the future suffer from degnerative joint problems that can only be solved by the Orthopedic surgeon.  From the responses I've received some don't believe me, or feel it will never happen to them.  To those all I can say is your day will come!

I guess I just don't understand how people "are cheating," because I wasn't aware there was a way to cheat with a fitbit. You put it on your wrist and walk. I guess there will always be those who look for a way to cheat a system, but I have to agree with previous posters that it only really hurts the person doing the cheating/lying. For me, I just went for the 50k badge to see if I could acheive it! It was a challenge to myself, made by myself, I wasn't even in a step challenge for that day. I love a virtual badge, but again- it is not my plan to do so every day, or even ever again... at least not until the next time I have some time on my hands and then maybe I'd shoot for the next badge up. 😄

This pretty much proves 50000 steps / person / day is achievable (we were teams of four going for one whole month), though the vast majority of the teams were more 'reasonable' :). Too bad we were in the sweet fourth spot ...

My 10,000 steps per day, give or take is about 4-5 miles each day.  Wouldn't 50,000 for one person per day be about a marathon each day?  It doesn't affect me; I just don't see it as likely for very many people.  Nor do I see the need for a marathon a day; but that's just me.  Why won't this subject die a natural death? 🙂

Thuth be told, it was more than a marathon a day -  especially the final week when we "spied" on each other, running in the park. Without having to set up a group run, we knew that during the afternoon / evening we were bound to meet :). The limits are what we define them to be - we were at least 12 of us hitting daily averages of over 60,000 during workdays and highs of 100,000 and beyond during the weekend!

Now I am back to 20-30 k a day and yes, the subject can die ;).

This subject has died a painful natural death a hundred times, @brunoray, but it just keeps being resurrected....  Smiley Sad

brunoray  I don't know.  It will stop only when the inevitable occurs, when the damage they are self inflicting on their joints becomes readily apparent.  That's what ended my daily runs, but I stopped before there was any permanent damage. I hope they have the same self awareness I had.

Corney, I recall that you promised not to post to this thread anymore. If you could have kept your negative (and incorrect) comments to yourself and kept your promise, this thread would have a lot better chance of dying, as it should. The question of the thread was "how do people average 50000 steps a day". There have been many, many answers showing that it is possible and description of how various indivuals do it. The question was not whether a bitter ex-runner ex-physical therapist thinks it is advisable.

i think 35 k a day is very doable with a good routine.  🙂

i guess if i pushed i could do 80 but ... that is one big step between 35k and 80k EVERY day.
not in my routine ... not for now anyways 🙂

to be honest i am not sure how people cheat ... we tested my watch and unless i am sititng there swinging my watch back and forth (which is a total waste of time ... might as well just walk around)  i dont see how someone can cheat a number.

Call me nieve but i believe most peoples numbers 🙂

the topic as i remember was not how one can get 50k a day it was about a 50k averah\ge over a month, huge difference, 1 vs 30, we are talking about an average over a month, even when i did marathons i needed days off so my body would be good to run. thats a 4.00 marathon go figure

I couldn't agree more; while I'm not training for a marathon per-se, I am in marathon shape.  This month I'm on track for about 340 running miles 535 total miles and yet, my daily step average over the last 28 days is about 29,000 steps; a far cry from 50,000.

From what I can glean here, people who run believe it is impossible (or at least very difficult) to average 50k/day for a whole month. Dedicated walkers seem to think it is pretty easy. I agree wholeheartedly with both groups.

That would mean the dedicated walkers would need to walk upwards of 25 or more miles per day, day in and day out.  Yes, it is certainly possible, but to do that AND have a life, a job, and a family at the same time belies reason.

If you have an undestanding spouse, I believe a month with daily averages between 50 k and 100 k can go by ...

As for the physical feasibility, I am pretty sure this guy's routine is well over 100 k daily steps this month.

Nope, sorry, I have to call shenanigans on that claim of 1,500 miles in only 20 days.
