I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

A treadmill in front of the tv with Netflix.
I find a particularly addicting series and I only watch it when I'm walking.
Found this tip on Buzzfeed, the list is awesome!

I love that! "I don't stop when I am tired, I stop when i am done..." One of those that really resonate with me. Thanks for the gem!

I'm a deaf college student. Typically on Tuesdays/thursdays my average step counts is about 4-8,000 steps. But Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays is usually about 8-9,000 steps. I typically try to walk to my classes by going up on hills (I go to Ohio university and we are known for having hills on campus) and taking the stairs to get to class. Sometimes when I am absolutely exhausted from pulling an all nighter for homework, I just take the escelator. But If I'm not really satisfied with how much steps I was counted for today, I'd just go to the gym and try to get that stepcount higher, which motivates me to be more healthier. I also have a friendly little competition between my boyfriend and I to see how many steps we would have in one day since we both go to different universties. My boyfriend goes to Gallaudet University (a deaf school in DC) and Gallaudet is a pretty small campus compared to Ohio University. So I would always text him and we would compare who had the highest steps that day.

I have been surprised at how these simple add-on's to your overall strategy, really help during a busy meeting day at work. If helpful, below are the averages I've experienced.
Waiting for computer to boot up = Avg 200 steps
Waiting for meeting participants to gather (rarely is everyone always on time) = Avg 200 steps
Infoshares and/or Webinars (where you are neither speaking nor presenting)= 500 steps
Washing your hands (Run in place as fast as you can as you wash & dry your hands) = Avg 50-75 steps
Waiting for coffee to brew= Avg 100 steps
Brushing your teeth (walk or march in steps)= Avg 100 steps

I work different positions in the same place but during different hours. Mondays and Thursdays are my long days but I struggle to reach 10,000 steps but I usually get 8,000 or sometimes 9,000. I get home ater 6:30 pm so I rarely want to work out but sometimes I'll do a quick mile walk work out to get to 10,000.
On days that I go to work later, I do an hour work out in the morning and then I'll walk a lot at work back and forth to the fax machine but rarely hit 10,000 miles unless I really try.
Weekends are easy for me to hit 10,000 or more because I'm not sitting at a desk job. I often wonder how so many people can get so many steps in a day..
