I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

Get those extra steps by putting on your device first thing in morning, [ I do not sleep with it on ]
taking it off last thing at night.
At the gym always moving between runs, or weights, never stand still, I keep pacing, counting those steps. People at the gym laugh at me , they say I never stand still, always moving. When I go to the mall park furkthest from door. Drive my friend crazy, she always looks for the closest spot, I do the opposite.

Come in early to work and walk for an hour or so; invite a group to go walking at lunch time inside your building or outside if weather permits. Keep walking every day; set your FitBit goals and strive to reach them every day. Keep Walking!!

I definately can use this topic as motivation.
I just bought a fitbit flex and I reach about 3000 steps a day.
I want to go to the 10000 every day. I am studying (and stressing) for my exams and spend all day at my desk.
I do walk around the house to get those 3000 steps a day

If I'm low on miles I take a walk to my local grocery store. Its about 3/4 of a mile from my house, a relatively pleasant walk. And there is always something to pick up - giving me a "purpose" other than just racking up steps. There and back is about 3700 steps and 240-odd calories.
If I need just a thousand or so - household chores are good for a few hundred.
I really try and avoid walking around simply for the purpose of adding on miles. Makes me feel like a hamster in a cage, I know a lot of folks are proud of their step count. But to me thats very much secondary to my real purpose: improving my health and feeling better. I need to buy groceries and keep my house clean - if FitBit lets me kill two birds with one stone, I figure I come out ahead.

The thing that has helped me the most is making a conscious effort to get out of my desk during the day and taking a short, 10-15 minute walk. I just walk down the street to the next stoplight and back, which is about 1,300 steps. I do this four times a day on workdays, so that really adds to my step count and I'm easily able to make 10,000 steps a day now.
I've also started walking my dogs around the neighborhood everytime I take them outside to use the bathroom, instead of just standing there while they go and then heading back in. This has probably added 2,000-3,000 more steps to my days as well.
