I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

The malls here open an hour early, before the stores open, for mall walkers, and they have "maps" that show the routes and distances. But, I don't get up and out that early...

By the time you get in your 70's, @Cyc, you get over being fanatical about exercising. LOL
My goal, set by my doctor, is 5 miles a day of walking. And, most days I do more than that, usually around 7 miles when I can walk outdoors.

Speaking strictly for myself, I *hope* I can still be at least somewhat fanatical about exercizing when I'm in my 70s; I'll let y'all know in 11 years. 🙂

Today's weather was a lot more civil, after last night's thunderstorms, and it was good to get back outside for a good walk.

I have found ways to allow extra steps into my day. I walk my dogs at 5:30am, drive my car to a train station to commute. I park my car near the train and walk all the way around the entire double parking lot before getting on a train (regardless of weather). I walk to work from the train station in downtown Toronto (very walking friendly). Take a walk at lunch time. Walk all the way around that parking lot when getting off the train in the evening (it allows for most of the fellow commuters to exit the parking lot, avoiding congestion). Walk the dogs when I get home - make dinner - and after eating, take my greyhound for a 4-6 km walk at a fast pace. Makes for good digestion, finding some peace & serenity in an otherwise work focussed life.
We get extreme weather: footwear and appropriate weather wear definietly helps. Minus 40 C with a wind chill vs Plus 30 C with high humidity can make it easy to rationalize not getting in walks. When we die, our body is but a pod, the peas leave... Its what we chose to dedicate our peas to that counts.

at work I use the printer on the other side of the office, forcing me to walk all the way around and back again. At home, when I'm really close to 10,000, I'll put my stereo on and dance to music to reach the goal.

For me, pacing is the key to getting those extra steps. Like many others, I pace around my house when I am talking on the phone or listening to music or an audiobook. But I also pace when I am getting ready in the morning. When I'm doing simple tasks like brushing my teeth, brushing/combing my hair, applying lotion, etc. I walk around as much as possible. When I do this several times during the day, my step count gets a signifigant boost. Hope this helps those who are trying to up their steps!

As a Christian, I pray every morning, but as a 66-year-old, my knees can't take kneeling for very long anymore. In the morning, when I'm all ready for work (and my wife is still asleep), I pace from the kitchen through the dining room to the living room and back again while praying. 20-30 minutes later I've had my time with my Lord, and have a bonus of about 3000 steps or so to start out my day's step count. 😉

On work days I spend both my morning and afternoon breaks walking loops around the parking lot. I can get in 4 each time. Then I spend my half-hour lunch break walking. I eat lunch at my desk when I get back (usually the only time I sit). I, and most of the office, use a standing desk now and I'm usually on my feet 7-1/2 to 8+ hours a day. I do a lot of stepping and jogging in place. When I'm waiting for reports to load or to print, I'm stepping. If I'm reading something lengthy on my screen, I'm stepping. And I park way out in the lot at work, and everywhere else. Every little bit helps. If I need to get in more steps to meet my goal I'll jog in place for awhile while I'm watching the news on tv.

Get up at a minimal of every two hours during work and walk a quarter mile to the cafe and back. I arrive at work which has a gym at 5:00am each morning to start out with 5k steps and by noon try to reach 10k steps. Then I do whatever it takes to reach 15k steps per day. I've only been walking 3 weeks but my steps have went from 4k per day to 15k per day and my resting heart-rate from 75 bpm to 62 bpm. I'm 56 years old and haven't felt this good in years .....
Please develope a more flexible custom tracking feature so I can track my blook sugar. 🙂
