I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

THere is also Every Move app. It offers point rewards for geting certain level of activity through FitBit.
YOu can check it out here
After you sync your fitbit all with Every Move, it takes your steps in a day, converts ythem to points.
Rewards are various discounts with companies like Skora and other not mainstream sportswear and otherwise related to active life style companies. But also some apparel, cosmetics, even wine.
There is a bunch of online training courses. Therer is also a choice to make a donation to a charity
rewards accumulate and you get bonus points for active days.
Then you redeem your points. Most of the items are offered in the form of discount and you want to check on Amazon before you choose that reward if that discount is worth swaeting for. Many of them are not.
But there are ocasionally good deals.
Once I got a case of wine for my points - the whole case for just $11 of shipping.
But I don;t see that company any more.

I am new to the fitbit thing and getting more and more motivated! Today I woke up 20 minutes earlier and took my dog for an extra loop around the block. I work for a new construction builder selling homes, so I sit in a model home all day in a large neighborhood. Which actually helps, I have been walking up and down the stairs, walking around the houses, walked around the cul-de-sac a couple times, walked up and down the big huge hill leading into the neighborhood a couple times. It can be slow with only a couple people coming in per day to visit so I just get up and go every so often! I just upped my daily goal on my fitbit from 10K to 15K since 10K was starting to get easy. 🙂

Threefingers,
Congrats! 10K steps is a great goal each day to start with. Before long, you'll be exceeding that. Good luck and just keep at it. That's the only way....

This is my first week with a fitbit. I like the 70,000 weekly goal. Having a desk job, I get close to 10,000 steps daily but on the days I go exercise I go over. I like the motivation to get up and get moving...

I find myself walking in circles or back and forth while doing things that take some time but you can't really walk too far away from as opposed to standing there and watching something do its thing. This applies at home and or mostly at work. I also find myself walking instead of taking the work cart unless I need to get there in a hurry. I also watch the clock a bit if I am up until midnight, if I am short of a goal or just feel like getting a few more steps, miles or active minutes I will walk really fast from 11:30 to midnight and rack up some very active minutes which of course results in more miles, steps and calories burned. People at work catch me walking really fast and I just blame it on too much coffee.

Absolutely, just this teeny little thing clipped to our belt makes such a difference! Keep going! I have a 5km race tonight after work, looking forward to that (and the 7500 steps it gives of course!)

I am fortunate to work at a university hospital with an expansive campus. At 7:00AM I usually take a 2.25 mile walk, and a couple of add-on 3/4 milers during the day. After work it's another 2-3 miles. While not always consistent with this, it does increase my chances of meeting my 12K step daily goal. I try to remember to wear my fitbit for activity periods only to keep the step count legit. Successful about 60% of the time. Have lost over 35# since April 2014

One way to be active is to do exercise during commercials. Also, half-time for us football lovers. But seriously, just move. Walk to the store in your neighborhood, park your car at the back of the lot where you shop, take the steps at work, etc. There are very few fat folks in Europe; the main reason is, they walk.

I actually enjoy talking with folks about business matters more during a walk than a meeting. It is more private and we also get to move around to boot. And in addition, it is good for you.

@Ali: Great accomplishment! I have yet to reach that milestone myself. On average it takes me 45 days or so to reach a million, and my record is 34 days. Sounds like fun to hit it in a month though!
