How do you get those extra steps in?

I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.

Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.

My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!

What do you do to get your extra steps in?

I get my steps in by doing some Zumba, spin class, and walking my dog.  Going to the track when I get off from work--we have an outdoor lighted track--most of the time I do 30 minutes---I will be increasing my time and mileage this week...so here come more stepping and my clothes are getting very loose...I just love this fitbit.....LOL

a weird thing I do is, I'll run around my apartment if I'm trying to beat someone's step count 😳

I do that too!

How does one post an entry into this blog?  I asked the Fitbit support folks and they said they don't maintain such a blog site.

I can comment on a post that's already there, but not create a new one.

Living in Montana, I don't have a mall close to me. but I do have a Costco Warehouse and a WalMart.  When it's cold out I head for one of these stores and walk all the isles....usually can get about 3000 to 4000 steps in.

Another trick, my bike/eliptical combo machine is in the livingroom.   I put the fitbit in my side of my sock and bike or stride any time I watch the tv. Since I hate the exercise bike I do tend to do more productive things around the house before getting steps in on the bike.   Other days, i just walk in place while watching tv.

This weekend--I went to the mall and forgot my fitbit....I was at the mall for about 2-3 hours...next time I am making sure I don't leave my fitbit behind....but will make up for this weekend..back to Zumba, running, spinning

This is also what I do. I work long hours 10 a day & commute 2. I only do 5k a day. So I take the dog for a walk or if bad weather or late I put my headphones on and power walk around my house.

  1. I park in a 7 floor parking garage at work.   I typically park on the 7th floor.  Instead of the elevator or steps, I walk around the periphery of the ramps down in the morning and back up in the evenings when I leave.  It's roughly a mile up and down.  Coworkers and I also walk in the parking garage up and down a few times during our lunch hour.  We have the benefit of walking on level ground plus a incline on the ramps at intervals. Good work out!
  2. I walk the periphery of big box stores (i.e. Walmart, Meijers, K-mart) and then walk up and down the aisles
  3. When I go to lunch, I take the longer route to the cafeteria or restaurant.  I walk around my building first etc.
  4. I take short walking breaks during the day.
  5. Step in place at my desk.  I'd love to have a treadmill desk!
  6. My aerobic exercise class helps too!
  7. I walk on the treadmill at least an hour a day.
  8. I park in the back forty at stores I go to, or the gym etc.  Anything for extra steps!

This is just a few of the things I do.

This morning, I planned on doing a 3.5 mile walk/jog in about an hour around my hilly neighborhood lake and streets.  When I got to the end of my cul-de-sac where my house is at, I was at 3.57 miles.  Seemed like a waste to be so close to 3.6, so I walked one more time around my cul-de-sac and ended at 3.64 miles.

During the mid-afternoon, I wanted to do 4 miles, but when I got close to the 3 mile marker, I decided to go for more.  When I got to the 3.87 distance, I figured if I just went "a little further..." and then head for home, I could break 4.5 miles.  I wound up doing 5.03 miles.

Tonight South East Outings is having a walk/hike on the Hillbsoro Trail south of Birmingham, AL.  A two mile out and two mile back old converted rail line.

All in all, will probably have around 32,240 steps taken today and over 3,000 calories burned.  Right around 13 miles.

I don't have a car, so when I get a lift I am dropped off a good 10 blocks from by faculty, so the walk is always great. Same when going home, that is another 5 blocks at least.

Also, I dance when I am cleaning/showering/cooking/doing anything. Makes things a lot more fun Cat Very Happy

How I get extra steps in m y day I try to push myself to park a little further away from the doors of places I go to and walk around outside when it isnt snowing. For me also I am actively looking for a job so I am walking everywheres like in Malls so that is an extra benifet. Or apply to places that are clustured close together in small area. I also hit the gym atleast twice a week.

Hi - haven't posted for a while. Yesterday was my Fitbit anniversary and I am excited to say this little gadget and great community has made this my best year yet. I walked over 10,000,000 steps and covered over 8,000 kilometres. And climbed over 28,000 flights of stairs. A year ago I never would have dreamed this. Happy - you bet 😄 Keep moving folks.

I get on treadmill in morning for an hour at 4.5. Then do my things around the house and get back on the "mill" for 30 more minutes. I pace around house, go to mall, park far away and take all stairs. I try to get 15,000 a day. If I am not there by 6:00 pm, I walk up and down my stairs.
