How do you get those extra steps in?

I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.

Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.

My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!

What do you do to get your extra steps in?

Mowing the lawn is always good for another 7500 or so!

I've started hoovering the house with the fitbit in my pocket (didn't realise that for some reason it wasn't counting the steps before!)

It won't let me sign in because my account has been closed.
Thanks anyway. I tried signing up again but wouldn't let me use smr50 so could go in and change. Not user friendly if you hit unsubscribe it takes to the log in.
Thanks again it is a viscous circle.

I started running on my urban rebounder, which was gathering dust in my workout room, in front of the TV to get my steps in if I don't do it before dinner.

I like to get my extra steps any way I can.  Ok, that was vague. lol   Sometimes I'll march in place while watching t.v. or I'll go outside with my dogs.  I know it takes approximately 600 steps to walk to my mailbox and back to the house, so that helps.  I live in the country, so I try to walk around our property a lot...but it isn't as fun in this Texas heat!!!

I have lots of allergies and asthma and fibromyalgia.  Exercise is not my forte.  However, I get extra steps in by walking around in a circuit in my house.  Sounds silly, but it works.

It doesn't sound silly at all.  As long as you're moving it's a plus.

@MCarr  Thanks!  My hubby calls it ccheating, but I think it's just using what you can.

It is certainly not cheating, a step is a step whereever you are! I do it too, and know loads of Fitbitters who do so.  Keep going 🙂

What do I do to increase my steps ... walk round and round my island bench in the kitchen when the adverts are on tv in the evenings.  Currently doing between 17,000 -  20,000 steps a day.   I also walk 5.5 ks with my dogs daily.  I also run up and down my stairs each time I pass them (about 20 - 30 times a day).  It certainly helps as does hiking once a week.  It's good to keep active especially at my age and every step helps.

I finally realized I wasn't going to get the kind of exercise I need while I'm at work, so I took a deep breath, set my alarm an hour earlier, and started walking 30 minutes (1.5 miles) every morning. Yeeks - but it really sets me up for the day. I've been doing that since the middle of May. The other day I added an evening walk as well. Tonight I decided I wasn't getting enough out of it so I added an extra half mile. Turns out it's also a great way to work out the day's stress. Who knew? <grins>

The high stepping on the spot shound a good idear. I live too far to walk to work and also need my car for work during the day so thats out. I have started using the steps instead of the lift. Have also set my fitbit for hourly prompts so I am going to try have a walk every hour no matter how short the walk it will add a few steps over the day. The other thing surgested to me is walk about when on the phone so I am going to try that too. Thanks for the idears

I step in place while watching TV or between chores (iron a shirt, 100 steps, iron a shirt, 100 steps...) and it adds up.

An oddment from my life - we used to walk our old cat on a leash around the yard. Every hour or so he'd come to me and 'ask' for a walk, which we'd usually go on. I recently counted the steps using my Fitbit and see that each walk that we'd take would count for 500 - 1000 steps, easily, and we were doing it several times a day. This is a cat, mind you, not a dog, and I figure he must have contributed to 10,000 steps a day, if I'd had such a goal then.

Alas, my present cat, who was a stray we found living in the compost pile at the back of the yard, is old and chubby and has no interest in seeing any of the yard ever again.

I like the idear of doing the steps each time you pass them although I have bad knees that don't like coming down steps but will go up them no problem so will give it a try
