I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

I walk to work and back!
But I'm super privilaged in that aspect, because it's only 2 and a half miles away.
I also run around at work constantly, hula hoop, and have cats that love to chase around fishing pole toys. It helps that I hate being still.

I park my car further away and always under a street light! I work at a hotel and after my shift I will take the stairs to the third or 6th floor up and half way down. I'm working on trying to do all the floors up and down. But it's a slow thing. That and at the end of my day all I really want to do is get home. ha ha!!!

Stair climbing is good exercise. Keep up the good work.

I am one of those parents who goes to a minium of 4 basketball games per week (not including practices). Instead of complaining how crazy this schedule is (on top of working) I walk 30 minutes before each game (because for some strange reason the coaches all want kids to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to a game). In addtion, I have added shopping therapy at Costco wearhouse, Walmart, the local Mall and Target. Sometimes I just look for one or two things, but can I ever rack up steps!

I've created some '500 step' videos for anyone who wants an extra 500 steps in less than 5 minutes! Enjoy!
I find that marching while drying my hair can get me around 1500 steps! It soon becomes pretty hard to stand still when you start moving all the time.
Good luck!

I live in a city where public transportation is predominant (like taxis, trams, subways, etc). But given the option, I'd always go for a walk if the distance is within 1-2 subways stops. It helps me get the heart rate up, get in those extra steps, and I feel great afterwards!
Things get dicey on those hot summer days, though.

When going to the mall, stop in the first empty parking space, instead of driving all the way down the isle looking for the space closest to the building. I do the same thing when going to the post office, to the doctor's office, to the grocery store, etc. This past weekend we went to the outlet mall looking for some new shoes. I parked at the entrance at one corner, and we walked the entire mall zig zagging up one isle down the next. Then, we had to walk back down the length of the mall to get back to the entrance. The FitBit said we walked 2.35 miles. But, we didn't get any shoes....

Great idea. If it's raining you can just walk around the mall.

At the end of the day if I haven't reached my goal I will jump on my treadmill to accomplish my goal and get extra steps in. It may not be the best plan of action but its working for me.

I take my dog for an extra long walk, his name is Kiwi and he's a border collie so he's always very happy to go outside some more!
