Personally, I would want to buy the new one for the warranty. The small savings on a used one would soon be lost if the device quit and needed to be replaced. If at all possible, buy a new one at a store such a Best Buy, Costco, Sam's Club, etc., where you can buy an extended warranty for the device.

Many people recommend purchasing an extended warranty on expensive Fitbits, just in case they fail soon after the standard warranty expires. I believe this would only be available on new items, not used ones.

If you purchase using an American Express card you get an extended warranty free.

As a personal recommendation I'd say, get a new one. Not only by the 1-year warranty from Fitbit and the possibility of getting an extended warranty from your retailer, but because if you purchase the tracker from another person, you're never 100% sure that they kept it in good enough condition to be reused and the state of the tracker itself.
