JumpStart January 2023 -- Step Challenge and Resolutions

Welcome to 2023!

It is January 2023 and it’s a great time to JumpStart the year and focus on some new goals ... a diet or exercise change, less drinking or smoking, going to bed earlier, learning a new skill … But, in this case, commit for just a month and see how it goes. You can do anything for a month, and if it still makes sense on January 31, try to make it ordinary come February. Or adapt it a bit.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme this month is What's That? Maybe a close up of something common, or an unusual plant, or a different angle. Sometimes What's That will be obvious to us, and other times you might have to tell us a story about it. Use your imagination.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

We got a minidump of snow overnight.  Not too bad, but I definitely contemplated calling out since I didn't have equipment to work from home.  That'll teach me to not carry it with any snow prediction. lol

So, what's this?

A tufted titmouse from a Baltimore street art project from a while back. The mural is about a mile from where I live. And the live model was about 30 feet from my back porch 🙂

@Baltoscott  — sorry to hear you’ve not been well. Take care, and wishing you an as-speedy-as-possible recovery. {BTW beautiful bird and nice art!}

@NellyG  — congrats on your new eBike! Happy riding and success on your new goal. 🚴

Met up with some other American families yesterday for an indoor sport (hadn’t played in xx years).

@Jotex — looks like fun. I’ve never seen the child ramp that’s in the background. Probably because I haven’t been to a bowling alley in years. Do you just scoot it up to the front of the lane and let kids roll the ball down the ramp? (When not climbing all over it, of course).

@NellyG —yeah, I’ve got one and I always think about it when I’m coming up on a big hill on one of ‘manual’ bikes :-). E-bikes are really fun, and you get plenty good exercise with a little help on the hard bits, and a little more speed on the easy bits.

@Baltoscott  — I hadn’t seen a kids ramp before either, but you’re quite right about how kids (with parents’ help) use it (& climb on it). They also put up gutter guards for the kids, too, so the ball has a better chance of hitting the pins.

This wall isn't very far from the site of one of my photos in November's thread, where there were half a dozen bossy signs.

It belongs to a very nice listed building, now divided into three residences, but originally just a big house with a very lovely garden.  The folks who lived there realised that people wanted to take a look at their garden, and so built this wall with a peep-hole to accommodate them.
