JumpStart January 2023 -- Step Challenge and Resolutions

Welcome to 2023!

It is January 2023 and it’s a great time to JumpStart the year and focus on some new goals ... a diet or exercise change, less drinking or smoking, going to bed earlier, learning a new skill … But, in this case, commit for just a month and see how it goes. You can do anything for a month, and if it still makes sense on January 31, try to make it ordinary come February. Or adapt it a bit.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme this month is What's That? Maybe a close up of something common, or an unusual plant, or a different angle. Sometimes What's That will be obvious to us, and other times you might have to tell us a story about it. Use your imagination.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Here's a little picture puzzle.  What is the purpose of the tower at the top of both photos?

Now a bit nearer to it:

And this one tells a story....IMG_0691.jpeg

The black shiny part of the picture is our back door, and the pole is a walking pole.  I'm outside it with Walter, and took this photo with my arm poking through the cat flap (which I'd had to force the lock on to get through it) trying to dislodge the keys hanging on a hook.  Yes.I'd gone out without keys, and couldn't wake Mrs Vidd. I took the photo to see if my pole was going in the right place.  Eventually I managed to knock the key holder off, along with everything hanging from it.  The house keys weren't there!  I realised that they were in another coat about fifteen feet from the back door.  I contemplated joining a couple of long bamboo poles together to try to fish the coat off its hook on the far side of the room, and then decided to knock on the upstairs window until I could wake Mrs Vidd.  Walter, our dog, understood the situation, and reacted joyfully when he could hear Mrs V coming to the rescue!

January wrap up.

Lost 4 lbs, only drank on one day, and didn't do too bad on my other goals given that I was out sick for about a week. So that's all good. I was hoping to beat last year's bike miles but maybe that will work out next January :-).  For now, it's Forward to February.

@Vidd -- no idea what is going on with that tower.

Your picture puzzle, however, is why I've got a lockbox in my garage with a spare house key. God bless Mrs. V.

@Baltoscott, Our golf course starts at 800 feet and goes up to 1200.  The tower is one of two on the course - the one in the photo is on the new 14th tee, from which you can't see the fairway - unless you go up the tower.

God bless Mrs V indeed!  I ordered a lockbox the morning after the lockout. 😚
