Just Say NO to Sedentary February — Step Challenge and REVISED Resolutions

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

So how did January go?  Are you still holding strong on those New Year resolutions?  Or have you completely forgotten about that?  🙂

Well, if your January goals were a little too ambitious, don’t give up.  Just walk it back a bit.  Instead of 6 days a week at the gym, commit to putting on your workout shoes for 3 mornings and walking a couple of miles, followed by some body weight exercises (you can still go to the gym, but if you’ve been missing, change the commitment somehow — less often, switch from morning to evening or vice versa — so it is easier to meet). Whatever it was you committed to in January, that has not successful, try doing half as much of it in February and see how that goes. (Of course, if you hit your goals in January, YAY YOU! Now keep practicing the goals you want as lifetime habits, and increase effort or time a bit). But above all, Just Say NO to Sedentary February.
How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme of the photo scavenger hunt for Just Say NO to Sedentary February is to find the ‘odd duck;’ something out of place; someone oddly dressed; something a little ridiculous.

Odd FrogOdd Frog

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

The 3D people shot is pretty cool @McDeborah.  Makes me think of the scene in Home Alone when the kid tries to scare off the burglars by setting up cut outs behind the curtains and playing the music loud.

I'm not so sure I will meet many goals today.  Between the snow and my headache, I may be down for the count when I get home.  🤕

Week 4 for me has turned into a bust.  I just hurt my knee. I heard a loud pop and now I can't put any weight on my right leg. My classroom is on the second floor of the school so this afternoon is going to be a bit of a challenge. I will look up some upper body exercises that I can do to finish out the week.  There is no way I will be getting my steps in, going to Jazzercise class, or attending Yoga class.  I will still try to take a photo for this week.  If anyone has some good upper body exercises let me know.

@McDeborahSo sorry to hear about your knee. I do hope it heals quickly.

Try youtube for upper body exercises. If weights are involved I would sit down until the knee is healed as you dont want to add added pressure to it. And they can be done while sitting if need be.

Hope you’re feeling better @WendyB and I wish your knee a speedy recovery @McDeborah. I remember that ‘Home Alone’ scene, too, @Baltoscott. You made a good trade @NellyG — swimming vs biking (on bad weather days)!

Is there already a new challenge up for March, or have I missed it?

Thanks for sharing the link with @Jotex  @NellyG.  I posted March Madness from my work computer at the end of the day and didn't have time to do my normal call out.

So, for those who haven't found it yet, here you go.  March Madness!  Calling out @SteppingBooks @McDeborah (great posts; keep it up) @Heidi_S_B @benvegi @JarheadChuck (OOO-RAH! -- I was a jarhead from 1978-82; how did it go for you this month?); @NDJ (go sign up for March! Baby steps.  One walk and post every Sunday might be the start of a great new habit!) @Kanga999 (good first month; lots of great posts and pics!), @Konababe (I know you are new to this; how is it going?), @FatherOfTen (We need to see more guys Mike, go post your goals and get some pics up for March!)

I think I already saw @CatLover74 @WendyB over there, I'm calling you out anyway; don't want you forget that we appreciate how much checking in helps keep the rest of us motivated 😉

Also, if any of you see someone else in the forums that you think might be receptive, send 'em the link for March Madness. (Invites any time during the month are fine) The more exercising folks we surround ourselves with, the more likely we are to keep up our good habits!  (I haven't reached out for a while myself, but I was happy that @Kanga999 joined in after mentioned this group in another thread.  Makes me want to do it more often).

Well, sorry I went a bit MIA for the last little stretch. But THIS community had me out at 11.30pm last night stomping around the neighbourhood so that I could notch up my third 15.000 steps 🙂 I didn't reach any of my nominated goals, but I did so much more than if I hadn't had a virtual team behind me, helping me be accountable - so I thank you for that. Thanks too to @Baltoscott  for alerting me to the group. See you all in March Madness!

SIDE NOTE: Today (March 1st) is Clean Up Australia Day, so I am about to go out collecting cigarette butts from the planter beds that my local council have out in the shopping area, and which the local smokers cannot help but sully with their butts. Than god for podcasts which will, hopefully, keep my internal monologues, berating smokers who don't responsibly deal with their litter, to a minimum 😞  If you feel so inclined, join me by collecting a few pieces of litter on your next walk as an act of solidarity.
