Muck-about March Madness — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Is it really already the third month of 2021?!?

Vaccines are starting to ramp up, and COVID seems to be waning just a bit!  And while It is surely too early to relax social distancing, the close of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and the end of summer in the Southern Hemisphere means it's is the perfect time to get out of house and muck about.  So go outside and enjoy the weather!!

In the meantime, it is time to commit to another month of health goals.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

March pictures should be a contrast from March 2020. Back then we were all starting to live, or at least read about, lockdowns, 6 foot spacing, and 20 second hand washing; and some of us were even starting to wear masks!!! Whoa!!! How have the people and public places in your area changed since March 2020? Look at your photos from then, and see if it is even possible to recreate the same picture at the same place now. I'm wondering if I will take my first train ride in over a year in March 2021.  Maybe.  What has your year been like?

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

@Baltoscott I'm not sure exactly how I got it,  I think I got it because our employer has gotten the go ahead to start on a priority list of faculty, staff and students because we have so many healthcare programs with active clinics and if on the morning of the event they haven't filled all the spots they send it out to another wave to make sure they do not waste any.  I would have been in the next state group no matter what, but I don't think my employer knows my health issues. But our office interacts with everyone.

Indoor dining at reduced capacity is OK in Baltimore right now. I especially like it when no one else is there. Pics below are of the market that is walking distance from my house. Last Saturday was the first time we had sat down to eat inside in almost a year. They've been mostly on take away and some outside tables on warmer days.

I realize my brain yesterday forgot to change the dates I posted for.  The days are starting to melt together. lol  Yesterday was so nice out, but there were a lot of people at the park which made it hard to find trails to walk without being slowed down (inevitably, they seem to come as groups and sprawl out so you can't pass them on the trail).  Today and tomorrow are also supposed to be nice.  Maybe I will be able to get to those last few steps to hit my step goal!

@SteppingBooks -- I know what you mean about the trails and groups spreading out. For my neighborhood walks the groups don't tend to be too big throughout the day, mostly two or three, but there are a LOT of them.  Can't walk in a straight line anywhere.  Seems like I cross the street two or three times every block to avoid someone coming down the sidewalk from the other direction, or cars and people in the street when I've moved to walking there.  I kind of feel like a magnet with the polarity reversed from everyone I come across 🙂

@Baltoscott I hear that!  The park I usually go to has pathways that range from 6ft to 10 ft wide, but inevitably, there are points where I almost have to go off into the mud just to not get knocked into.  Yesterday, so many people were there, that they were almost blocking the main roadway to get in and out.  I'm thinking since the majority of our snow has melted, I will try walking my road today.  I hadn't been yet because there's still so much snow and little space to dodge cars, but I fear today the park would be even worse (today's supposed to get into the 60s for us).

Maybe it's just me, but ever notice if someone coming toward you on the opposite side of the path is using their phone, they somehow start on one side of the path and then seem to wander to the other side in front you?  I get that a lot.  They don't look up until they almost walk head-on into me.

I think I saw a Robin yesterday!  I'm not 100% because of how far away it was, and the way the light was hitting.  The downside of all this snow melting at once: mud.  Pure, liquidy mud.  I did so good about not kicking it up on the back of my legs, I ended up with it on the front.
