Need shoe recommendations.

Now that I'm doing a lot more walking I need to get better sneakers. I'm noticing some lower back pain (not really pain but annoyance) so I'm especially interested in sneakers that will help with that.

I've heard nothing but good things about Asics for both running and walking. They have a nice thick sole.

Hope this helps 😉

I love Vibram shoes and Merrel are pretty good too if you don't like things between your toes but Vibrams are my top pick.

A little caution about getting into toed shoes such as Vibram -

Because they provide little to no support, you need to first train your body to run with a flat foot as opposed to  what's considered a "normal running style." This involved landing more on the pad of your foot vs. the heel.

The worst thing you can do is pick up a pair of these trendy shoes and go on running as you have always done! If you consider these, make sure to watch plenty of instructional videos and give them a try before committing.

Hope this helps! 🙂

I suggest you go to a good running shoe store and get fitted. Your feet will thank you.

After being fitted you can shop around for cheaper prices. But feet do change and so I would get fitted every year or two. They should be changed out every 300-500 miles as well.

My feet do best in Acisc or Brooks. But your feet might not like them.

I have had the best luck with new blance shoes, the price is something i can afford and they are comfortable. just make sure you try them on because differnt styles are differnt, and i had never been properly fitted, i found out the reason i said all shoes hurt my feet was because i need wide width that made all the difference!

I always choose New Balance brand. Switch to the brand long ago after gave up on Nike. Pretty comfortable.

It's definitely worth it to go to a dedicated running store and get fitted. I was wearing worn-out Asics for years and when I finally got fitted for a pair of Saucony running shoes, my entire workout changed because I felt so much better in them.

Edited to add: Please PLEASE bypass any of the trendy "fit shoes" that force you to walk on an incline (Fit Flops, Sketchers Shape-ups, etc). They're really, really terrible for your body.

No one shoe or brand is better than another.  I'm an ADIADAS girl and my husband only wears New Balance. Its personal preference/comfort. I agree that a good running store (not a big box sporting goods store) can steer you in the right direction.  Take the shoes you are currently wearing with you.  There's information in how your shoes have worn with use that will be helpful.

I personally love my Asics but I also had my feet fitted for plastic inserts at a foot store.  That made the difference with all the walking I was doing - I could never walk without inserts again.  They took an impression of each foot.  Cost a little bit of money but was well worth it.

I love my Asics gel nimbuses - I'm 38 and have been running/working out in Asics since I was 15 years old!!  I would suggest that - for your first pair - going to a store that specializes in running shoes.  It will cost more but the salespeople generally know the shoes really well and can help you get the perfect pair.  After that first pair,  you can shop online - I get great deals on Asics from 6pm.com and Amazon.

It is very difficult to recommend shoe brands to someone because everyone's feet are different.  You need to consider such things such as do you feet supinate or pronoate (roll in or out), do you have a high, medium or low arch, do you have any foot pain issues, etc.  Your best bet is to viist a running shoe store for an evaluation as Wendy suggested.  A particular shoe or brand that works well for one person could very well be a bad choice for your feet, and vice versa.

I personally love my Mizuno Creation Waves.....they fit like a comfortable glove from the very first day I wore them.  I loved them so much that went back to the store the following week and purchased the last two pairs they had so I would have them as spares when the first pair wares out.  But, the perfect shoe for me is not necessarily the right one for you.  I tried Asics in the store and did not like them at all.

Asics are wonderful, but this year I discovered a shoe that surpassed even Asics for my temperamental feet. The brand is Saucony. I don't think I will ever buy another brand of shoe, and they were actually a little cheaper than the Asics I have. All the major shoe stores carry them I think.
