Piyo and Fitbit

I have been doing Piyo with the Fitbit, but one of the most frustrating things is that after a grueling 30 minutes workout it does not count it as "very active" minutes even though sweat is POURING off of me.  Is anyone else using Piyo or a Pilates/Yoga program?  How do you track it to reflect that you are "active"?

Fitbit is not a Heart Rate Monitor.

Even though its hard and you are sweating Yoga is not step based so fitbit is not going to pick it up as active Minutes

Manually log it and hopefully you will get some active minutes

Hi Phyllis,

I have the same problem with logging/creating activities.  Im not certain if this is the "correct" way but:

I go to activities, create a new activity such as piya or spinning, enter the time I was active in that activity and  sometimes it will ask for distance or intensity, and then the calories burned.  I usually go to MFP to get a rough idea of calories but because MFP seems to overestimate calorie burn, I list a number a little lower than that.  Once entered, it usually counts towards very active minutes.  Remember, very active minutes is based upon number of steps in a certain timeframe and some other stuff.  The more steps you can log in 15 minute increments, the more likely you are to receive very active minutes.

The ultimate goal is to get you MOVING!  Dont get too worried about the little things.  Keep stepping!!

I have been manually logging it in, and it does not give me any activity minutes. That is why I asked.

See the definition of very active minutes (VAMs).

In order to get VAMs for a logged activity, the total amount of calories for the activity logged should be six times your burning rate at rest. So if you're burning 1 calorie per minute doing nothing, your 30 minute PiYo session needs to burn 180 calories or more in order to qualify for VAMs.

Anyway, as @Flylow21-Judy said, VAMs are just an extra motivator. It's not the end of the world if you don't get as many as you think you deserve, or even if you get none for logged activities (which are all or nothing . Consider your heavy sweating as a better indicator of your real exercise level.

Also note that, from a weight loss perspective, exercise is only about 20% of the equation, the rest being nutrition. As many have said here, "you can't out-exercise a bad diet".

@Flylow21-Judy I get active minutes when logging spinning. Go to Your dashboard and tap the Log tab. Select Activities. Look for the search bar under Log Activities and search for spinning. Just enter your start time and duration. Fitbit will estimate calories on its own - you don't need to look it up. Let me know if that doesn't work for you.

As a PiYo Instructor I can tell you that in a 1 hour class I burn 650 calories.  Are you doing a class?  Is it a full 1 hour?

You are absolutely correct.  650 is for me; as the instructor.  My class participants, all ages and sizes, average 425
