Problems with Joints

Good evening.

I'm a teen with a lot of questions that need answers. Please help if you can!

Okay, so in 2015 I was diagnosed with Multi-Directional Instability all over after I had a shoulder dislocation raising my hand in class. Yes...only raised my hand! I saw several doctors and they all told me the same thing (Southern Bone & Joint): You have loose ligaments that are not fixable at your age, because it's a painful surgery. I understood at the time, but now it's been a year and I've had several Emergency Room visits. The problem is now a major factor in my lifestyle. I want to play sports, but the doctors and physical therapist say not to, because it's high risk. Before I was diagnosed with MDI I was very outgoing and athletic, but I want some insight from you all who may can help. Is it a smart thing to start working out/ playing sports again? I'm currently overweight and out of shape, but nervous I could do more harm. Anyone can add if you'd like!

Have a great day.

I think you need to listen to your DR.  Ask them what kind of activities you can do and be safe.

@Amy_Noelle: you may be out of shape, but you’re definitely not overweight (based on what you told us in another post). You need to talk to someone who has a good understanding of the way the human body works: it could be a doc, as suggested by @WendyB, or a physiotherapist, or someone with a good background in exercise science.

Thank you Mr. Dominique, but I feel as if I'm overweight. Over the years I've always been known as a health fanatic, and for me my normal weight range is 130-135....and I'm almost 140. I've also had a knee dislocation by falling 15 feet off of bleachers at a game, and the Doctors had no idea what to tell me. Normal people (Not Doctors) gave me the best advice as to what I should do so I always like asking everyone and anyone's opinion. I will gladly talk to more doctors though.

But you’re only 16. When you say "over the years", you cannot compare yourself now to what you were when you were 13. You’re probably taller and the shape of your body has changed. As you are getting closer to your adult size, BMI starts to be relevant, and 22.4 is a perfectly normal value.

Sometimes I forget that I've grown taller since I'm the shortest person in the room most of the time. All of my family and friends are giants compared to me.....your right! I shouldn't really try to lose weight, but instead focus on eating healthy and getting muscle.
