Readjust August 2020 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Readjust August — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Late summer usually means some vacation for my family, and this year is no exception; except it is a bit. Not flying anywhere, but will be taking a road trip. Indoor eating at restaurants is off-limits at the moment, so we will be getting a lot of takeout and trying out the kitchen in the house we will rent.  Exercise won’t involve the gym, but there will be a lot of bike rides, unicycle practice and walking.  In sum, there will be lots of adjustments during Readjust August. :-).

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme this August is a nod to wanderlust and the road (some will note this is a repeat from August last year).  My friend @NellyG suggests bridges and overpasses along the way, and water when you get there … or was it the other way around?  Well, post your goals below and post your pics throughout the month.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Readjust August – Days 17 & 18 (Monday & Tuesday)

5,000 steps Monday-Friday:  *12/21 (Monday 13,179 steps & Tuesday 13,610 steps)

7,500 steps Saturday-Sunday:  *6/10

3 times each week strength training:  6/12

increase my water intake & focus on healthy meals:  18/31 (taking advantage of the berries and melons in season for summer salads with lime/honey/olive oil splash)

Scavenger Hunt Photos:  0/3

I am having no trouble exceeding my step/distance goals because I include projects/tasks. Whether it is dropping something off at the Post Office, picking something up at the grocery store, or getting my flu shot at the pharmacy (earliest I have ever done this), walking toward something helps. Thankful for the Burke/Gilman trail that covers 18.8 miles of King County, Washington (between Seattle and Bothell). One would think I could get some photos.🤔😅

My daily unicycling in the flat beach streets of Rehobeth got me up to about 4.5 mph and rides over an hour. Such a huge improvement over the 3 or 4 blocks I was doing just a month or two ago. Now that I’m back home I’m getting better navigating the hills and bumpy streets of Baltimore too!

Went to my yearly physical on Thursday and got a booster for my pneumonia vaccine. Pretty sore in the shot area on day 2 and feeling tired. Also very slight temperature.

I realize this is a normal reaction to some vaccinations and will likely clear up in a day or two. (I had a similar reaction to Shingrix shot back in January and March, though my yearly flu shot hardly ever has a reaction). Still it is hard not to think about COVID.

@Baltoscott - hope you’re feeling normal now.

I went to the doctor about my knee pain (now it’s both 😳). She’s sending me to the MRI to identify where the problem is. Re. the arthritis and diet, she recommended avoiding beer, white wine, champagne, and all shellfish. Also if I’m sensitive to avoid lactose and wheat.

Thanks @Jotex -- Getting better and even more positive it is just a mild reaction to the vaccine. Temp was fine this morning but a little high this evening; shot area still sore but not as bad. I hope the diet changes help with your knee pain. I would be sad to give up beer. White wine and shell fish too, but not quite as much. I guess you'll be limiting our vices to red wine 🙂

In any event, I guess I felt good enough this morning. I got 3+ miles in on the unicycle and then did a 25 mile "bridge" tour of Baltimore on my bike to get in a bunch of scavenger hunt photos.

@Baltoscott  I can see why you would think that after your shots. I would have to! Glad you are feeling somewhat better. Awesome pictures!

@Jotex  Would be hard to avoid some of those for me. I love shrimp, wine

Beer I could give up 🙂 Champagne I have once a year on new years.

@WendyB — thank you! Yes, shrimp will be missed. I love it fried and in gumbo, especially. However,  beer was never my drink (allergy), and white wine or Prosecco I only drank on special occasions, or with fondue or raclette (need to reduce dairy, too, uh oh ... ). But red wine is my first choice.

I see I got my dates mixed up. Will correct it on my next post. Not sure that will be today. Need to take it easy.

@WendyB — I have always had a sensitivity to milk, and only started eating cheese on top of pizza in my late teens. I put lactose free milk in my coffee, which I think doesn’t matter much, However, now I love Raclette .... might have to cheat once in awhile to allow that! 😇
