Readjust August 2020 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Readjust August — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Late summer usually means some vacation for my family, and this year is no exception; except it is a bit. Not flying anywhere, but will be taking a road trip. Indoor eating at restaurants is off-limits at the moment, so we will be getting a lot of takeout and trying out the kitchen in the house we will rent.  Exercise won’t involve the gym, but there will be a lot of bike rides, unicycle practice and walking.  In sum, there will be lots of adjustments during Readjust August. :-).

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme this August is a nod to wanderlust and the road (some will note this is a repeat from August last year).  My friend @NellyG suggests bridges and overpasses along the way, and water when you get there … or was it the other way around?  Well, post your goals below and post your pics throughout the month.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

As I get better on the unicycle I've been working more challenging surfaces. Wound up dropping off trying to negotiate a bump in the pic below and realized it counts as a scavenger hunt pic because of the rain water.  😁

I was actually shy 3 steps of my step goal yesterday, but added it anyway, since I took at least that many steps after taking my Fitbit off. Which reminds me, I’ve been meaning to ask ... do y’all sleep with your Fitbit on or off? Just curious.

@JotexI sleep with it off. My arm needs a rest. I did sleep with it on when I first started to see the sleep. But it was not very accurate for me so really saw no point.

5,000 steps Monday-Friday:  15/21

7,500 steps Saturday-Sunday:  6/10

3 time each week strength training:  7/12

increase my water intake & focus on healthy meals:  21/31

Completely forgot to post these days – good thing the information is in my Fitbit dashboard. Playing catch-up this weekend with posting and learning that I need to make the time to post (am) so that it is current.

My focus this month has been on eating healthier and drinking more water – and so far this month I am hitting that mark. It is amazing how cutting out processed foods and alcohol (was falling into the trap of cocktail hour with covid19) has made a difference in my energy level and sleep.

I missed a day of walking – having Zoom conferences with an 8 hour time difference can screw up my schedule – but really there is no excuse as the days have been pleasant into the evening. Just need to be flexible enough to walk whenever I get some time.

Will not be meeting my strength training this month – perhaps that needs to be a focus in September – as I let the day get away and then just don’t do it. Thinking that an extra half hour in the morning might be the best time to focus on strength training and posting so that I stay on track. Walks have been great as I can go in several directions with the trail by my home and there are always tasks to walk towards. My focus for the weekend is to work on a strong finish to the month of August (and perhaps some photos) for my first Community Challenge.

@Jotex -- I sleep with my fitbit on. I really like the sleep metrics. It is kind of like daily weigh-ins and all day heart rate monitoring. What the measure is on a particular day doesn't matter as much as looking back over past months and checking out trends.

Speaking of weigh-ins, my TrendWeight went up 1/2 a pound this month, and my goal was to maintain. With two weeks of August being my vacation, I'm calling that a win.

Thanks @WendyB and @Baltoscott. I can’t sleep at night with mine.

Last day, I went to Bern to take an art course with a friend. Got a few scavenger hunt pics.

Bern has a lot of fountains, which many years ago provided water to city residents.

That’s it for Readjust August. Got my last weight lifting day in this morning but rain and four hours of virtual meetings killed any opportunity to get in the rest of my steps today. So two days short of goal on steps, but pretty good on the rest. See you all next month 🙂

Unfortunately I ended up gaining about two pounds this month.  I know it's stress related.  Hopefully September will be a better month.
