Settle a debate

Okay, I am part of a daily Showdown challenge.. However today I am in a office ALL DAY..  with no chances of a outdoor walk, or walking around while working. So I have my fitbit on my ankle.. And I have been marching in place from my chair. making sure each step i am lifing my knee as high as I comfortably can, with out hitting my desk. Moving/ marching 15 -20mins at a time.. So now I have  met my "step goal" A fellow challenger is saying those steps shouldnt count since I am sitting... I dont see any difference from marching in place standing vs. Sitting.. Am I wrong..?

Challenges are always having this discussion. Many people question a person who is able to really blow the competition away with so many steps daily or weekly, that it would seem impossible to do. Fact is, some people actually do the steps you see and some don't. There are many ways to add on steps.. Put the device on an overly active child or shake your wrist while watching a movie. You never know what people are doing, so it's a matter of trust, isn't it?

 

It depends, too, on your group of friends. Not everyone is in a job where they can walk around, so you do the best you can. Since the devices are wrist based, all it takes is a flick of the wrist to register a step. No one knows what other people do to obtain their steps.

 

Marching in place is different from moving your leg while sitting. I think that when you're sitting, you're not expending as much energy. Maybe that's what your challengers are complaining about?

 

Guess you told then about your sitting today? Maybe it would be a good idea not to share with them how you obtain your steps.

 

In the end, all we can do is strive to be more active and keep on moving.

Personally, if you're sitting and just lifting your legs, I don't think that counts.  But that's just my opinion.

 

I stand and march in place when the weather is bad and I can't get out to do my usual runs, but sitting down and just lifting your legs is not stepping.  Again, just my opinion.

You're going thru the effort to do it so i think you're doing good and it should count.  It shouldn't be so highly competitive that it creates animosity .

Your caloric burn will not be corrected.

Personally I feel you are cheering the spirit of the challange.

@jennydepoohif you wear a wrist type Fitbit with HR detection ensure you wear it on the inside of your ankle to get a more accurate HR.. Then you look at your effort HR graph to ensure you are still in the spirit of the challenge.

 

Others rest their Fitbit wrist hand on their knee when they stationary cycle. Again it gets back to effort..

Personally I would be more worried about the calorie burn being completely wrong. For each step registered fitbit is assuming you are walking, which includes the leg movements, travelling and carrying the weight of your body. Stepping sitting down is only providing the leg movements.

 

Personally I wouldn't even stand and walk in place, as I still think it's less effort than real walking, and like I said, I want my calorie burn estimate to be as accurate as possible.

 

As for challenges though, I think it depends how the other people feel. If they have a problem with how you are acquiring your steps, then I'd say it's best not to enter that week. The most important thing to remember though is that the challenges are supposed to be just for fun. So even if you don't get many steps, there will always be tomorrow or next week.
