This is the most I've walked since I was a teenager! I've really put a lot of miles on my 'new' shoes that I got back in June and they are really starting to show some wear. Got me to thinking - what kind of shoes do you wear/suggest and how often do you replace them. Either miles or time frame would be great. Thanks in advance.

Real running shoes designed for longer life - 500 miles.
Cheaper shoes that just look like running shoes, probably 250.
Other shoes, may be less.
Actually, the type with minimal padding that teach you to walk better, how ever long the tread lasts.

That depends on your weight and how hard you strike the ground. Traditional running shoes tend to last me about 300 miles give or take, my wife gets about 500 miles out of her running shoes. About 2 years ago I transitioned to Fila Skeletoes for all my running, they are barefoot style shoes with no padding just some tread on the bottom and I wore my first pair for well over 1,000 miles before they started to fall apart and had very little tread left on the soles.
Like the other posters pointed out, when you can feel the padding not working well any more it is time to replace. Also don't run in shoes that are more than a year old, the padding and cushioning will get harder and stiffen with time. I don't buy shoes at discount stores for that reason, bought a pair at Big 5 that were last years colors for about half the regular price, but they were shot in just a few weeks and never felt great even when they were new (to me).

I cover the bottoms of my shoes with black Gorilla tape. I patch the worn spots each day. This allows the soles to last indefinitely.
I wear Danner Combat boots and have over 2,700 miles on them. They show no significant wear. It's probably time to get new inserts,

You may want to consider going to a specialty store to buy your running or walking shoes--such as Fleet Feet or other independent running store in your area. They usually have well trained personnel to properly fit you. They will actually analyze your gait--watching you walk or jog without shoes, looking to see if you are neutral, or if your feet role or rotate in or out and need stability or motion control shoes to correct your gait.
They will then bring out shoe choices they believe will give you the support and comfort you need. The right kind of shoe is so important, and will not only provide more comfort--but can actually help prevent unnecessary pain and injury that can lead to discouragement and even walking or running less than one would with the right shoes.
Saving money by going to a big box store and ending up with the wrong shoes because the selection was an uneducated one based on cost and or how the shoes look, is really not worth it. Walking or running in the right shoes is also motivating because they help and feel good. Hope that helps.

I'm just going through that now because I felt my NB walkers were starting to feel soft on impact. I alternate 2 pairs and after reading this link I'm out purchasing tomorrow

I have only got 390 miles (630 kilometres) out of each pair of NB mens walkers in 6 months. The new pair I'm wearing today has immediately eased my lower back pain. Probably cheaper than my Physio. Seems to agree with the web sites, but most say walking should be about v3 times that. I'm only 11lb (5kg) overweight. You can't detect wear on the outside but it is obviously the cushioning in the shoe has failed.
Comments from others would be appreciated.
