Snowed in!

So I live in the wonderful state of CT, and if you've been watching the weather it's not pretty. How do you guys get some extra steps in when stuck at home? I can't just pace (we are on the second floor and I don't think our downstairs neighbor would appreciate it! And, to put it bluntly, I'm fat so the stairs are out because they are right over his living room lol he'd probably think there's an earthquake!) So any ideas to get to a halfway decent number? I may shovel our sidewalk, but that's not going to be much at all.

Hi, I don't know if you are a walker or a runner.  I've been doing the Leslie Sansone walking videos when it is icy out. Recommended by a lot of Fitbit users and available on YouTube.  I like the 4 Fast Miles and usually do it twice.  I don't do the "dance" moves, just march in place as my old knees won't take the jumping.

that sucks! i've heard people just saying they pace up and down their house.  When i'm lazy and don't want to do anything i put on a tv show, and walk up and down the living room for the duration of the show. 🙂 I feel like its lazy excerise but i'm getting those steps counted!

We are in Salt Lake City, and when the weather is really bad, we have a exerecise room at our apartment building that we use.

You have stairs. I would run the stairs every 15 minutes or something. 

 

i have snow i was in the car for over 2 hours to work. normally 30 minutes. so this does put a damper on my step count. And I think i have a fix.. mini challenges. i'm going to post about it now! lol

If it makes you all feel better, I live in Australia..... We are in the middle of our hottest summer on record!!!

So far where I am we have had at least 12 days around 45C (110F) and for the past 6 weeks have averaged 37-40C (100F) . The air feels thick and burns your eyeballs. The best time to get out is after 8pm or before 6am. I would love a bit of snow right now....

I've been doing stairs at home today.  I've got two flights in my house so a round trip usually gives me two floors (but sometimes I get ripped off and my fitbit only counts one!).

 

I've also got a rebounder (mini trampoline).  Most of the high steppers I know (20K-30K and above) have one of those or a treadmill.  A rebounder is a lot cheaper and easier to move around than a treadmill and you don't have to touch the ceiling to use one. Mostly you just do a "health bounce" where your feet stay in contact with the trampoline.  Not too hard to watch TV and you can bounce higher if you want to work harder.

I just pace my house.  The snow here is bad too but I belong to a gym so if the roads are clear I try to get there and workout.  They have a track for running or walking that is inside.  Also, trips to places like the grocery store help.  Do all the aisles even if I just need a few things and park very far from the entrance. If the snow is too bad to go out, I really do just pace the house.  I haven't come up with anything better.

On the move but going nowhere.

i am too having bad weather so i walk in place for 15 minutes if you give it a real go it will get some of your activity numbers up .

i walk in place to help me get my numbers .if you give it a real go it helps.i do this 15 min at a time during my day

DANCING!!!!  Put on some great music and move your body!!  Just be sure to move those feet too (a little step/touch/step/touch won't be too hard on the downstairs neighbor)!!  I Kitchen dance almost every night while cooking dinner.  Ads up quick!!!

Shadow boxing will have you moving your feet (without jumping, stomping, running in place and making a bunch of noise that will bother your neighbor below) as well as your arms. You will get plenty of steps registered and will get your heart rate/cardio up. It's a great exercise when you are stuck indoors in a confined space.  Depending on what sort of shape you are in, do 5 one-minute rounds or 5 three-minute rounds or whatever. You can do this multiple times throughout the day.

 

Side note in case you've never shadow boxes. Don't "punch the air" as hard as you can or you will injure your elbows or possibly your shoulders. Focus on short and quick, controlled movements. Imagine that you are standing 1 foot from something and you have to punch it now powerfully, but quickly and in succession. Short, rapid strokes. Don't fully extend your arms to protect your elbows.

You mentioned shoveling your driveway. You may not register a ton of steps doing that, but I can assure you that you will get a very good workout.

 

I'm in Indiana and we got 11 inches of snow last night. Shoveling my driveway this morning was just as hard as my CrossFit class will be this afternoon in many ways 🙂

I couldn't agree more. I don't even bother wearing my tracker when I'm doing the snow - I just log it manually. One bit of advice - make sure to do some warm up exercise first, with a focus to the shoulders and back!

Here in Northern NJ USA we were snow bombed today. Eight inches on top of what we already had, driving home from work was just no fun. I'm not going to sweat not getting in as many steps. Just walking down our front walkway is taking your life in your paws....woooof, I hate winter.

I live on the 4th floor and do various Leslie Sansone workouts.I don't usually do the more recent ones with jumping up and down but when I do, I generally just do another kind of step. The beauty of LS is you can just march all the way through, if you want. It's initially about keeping the pace, not the kind of movement you make.

 

I figure if the downstairs folks complain, then I may change which of my workout routines I use but frankly, I think they'd rather I work off the pounds than clomp around for years. No one has complained, though, for 5 years.

One thing you can do to minimize the possible noise is buy something like Edushape Solid Play Mat, 25 Count (Amazon). You can also get similar matting from Lowes or Home Depot.

 

Another thing you could do is get a treadmill. Kinda pricey but it will help you build up steps at a pace you can manage.

Don't let other people's possible or actual reaction to your exercise keep you from doing anything indoors. Most folks will back down when you tell them you're working to get in shape.

 

The best thing you can do for yourself and your neighbors is to get fit and be in good enough shape to help out if something happens.

I love in snow country too and can't wait for it to come around. Shovelling the snow, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are all fun for me. Unless it's a blizzard out there or cold enough to make it hazardous, I am out there enjoying as much of the winter as I can. And by the way - I never missed a chance to get into a friendly snowball match with the neighbourhood kids (of any age!) Smiley LOL
