Step Goal

ANSWERED
how many of you adjust your step goal? My step average is 18k a day, but that can fluctuate when life gets hectic, or increase to 20k if I'm doing really well. I do go to cycle and lift weights, which deist really give me too many steps, so I've always left my step goal at 10K while trying to get 20k. With the daily challenges I participate in now, I'm wondering if I should bump it up. I realize that this is a personal preference, but what are your thoughts?

my view is : if not reaching your daily step goal would make you more active to reach it, then definately change it. If its not going to change your habits then leave it as it is.

I changed my step goal to 7k because it was a more attainable goal for me without being too easy. I increased my goal to 8k this month because I was reaching 7k more often than I had been before. When 8k becomes easy I will have another increase.

I do believe more people should lower or increase their goal if they participate in challenges. What's the point of a 10k pat on the back if you reach 20k every single day? But if you are starting out as a former couch potato, 10k may be too high and unrealistic.

I've kept the original daily step goal of 10k, but I have a "mental" weekly goal of 100k. I find a weekly goal offers more flexibility. Plus it's easy to follow in the mobile app, since the 7-day rolling step count is the basis on which you "compete" with your friends.

For "goal day" challenges I change my step goal to reflect what I'm going for on that day.  I like goal day challenges because it doesn't focus so much on absolute step numbers which makes it more motivating for people with different goals to interact.  We all win if we hit 100%, right?

But in that type of challenge, if you know you are going to do 20-30K (or more!) and keep your "goal" set at 10K, it seems like you are trying to rig the game :-).

@Baltoscott, thanks for the feedback. I agree. I bumped my goal to 15K today. If I end up running instead of going to cycle will up it to 20K. 🙂

@CAGIRL- I've learned that once you accept a challenge you are stuck with whatever goal you had set at the time.

Another thought.  Several of my friends have a flex and they routinely change their daily goal in order to get meaningful feedback from the flex progress indicators throughout the day (not all of them have phones that sync with the flex and some just don't want to sync throughout the day).

Obviously that's not a problem for you with your brand new Surge Man Wink

I'd say so.  If you know that you are going to surpass that 10K every day, absolutely increase.  You'll get that extra boost when you're nearing the daily goal and a bit more personal satisfaction. Aim high!

I still have my step goal at 10k per day right now. On days when I work, that's usually pretty easy to obtain but on my days off, I haven't been getting close. I was thinking about upping my step goal until I looked back at my data and realized that I wasn't even hitting 10k a lot of days, so right now I'm trying to increase my activity and then I plan on upping my step goal once I'm getting 10k+ steps most or all days.

I think changing the step goal to something just a bit higher than the amount of steps you are typically getting is a good way to motivate yourself to be more active, or at least that's what I'm hoping to do with my step goal.

I'm feeling thankful that I increased my goal to 15K this week. I ended up getting a slow start to my day on Tuesday, and had I not increased it, I wouldn't have pushed myself to hit my goal. I would've stopped and been fine with being at 10k.

I just increased my goal from 10,000 to 15,500, because I'm trying to lose weight by burning more calories. (I'm watching what I eat as well.)
