Step counts while elliptical.. Cheating?

Would you consider elliptical steps counted by Fitbit cheating when competing in a step challenge?

Hmm, I personally wouldn't count that as cheating.

The whole point of the steps is to get fit and burn calories.

Even if its part of a challenge, you're moving your legs in a stepping motion, so technically, you're still doing the work.

Attaching it to your 5 year old is cheating. As mentioned above, the elliptical mimics walking. Fair game.

No since my fitbit only records about half of the steps I take on my ellipitcal, since mine doesn't have movable arms.  I only use the rails for every other song so I only get credit for half my steps.

Meaning, elliptical steps do count? Or don't count.

Forgive the response nearly a year later, but this just came up during a challenge and I need to find the correct answer.

Thanks!

I guess it depends on the rules of the particular challenge.  Does the challenge only allow walking and running to count steps?  If not, then no it isn't cheating to use an elliptical - you are taking steps if you are using an elliptical, aren't you?
