Tracking steps question

A total newbie question! If I am not moving my wrist will my fitbit still track my steps? For example if I am pushing a grocery cart or carrying something and my arm is not moving?

There is a good chance it will not track steps then, but it depends.  It could be that there is still enough motion with each step for fitbit to recognize, but probably not reliably.

However, if you have a tracker that includes heart rate, calories burned will still be good because they are based on heart rate, not steps.  If accurate step count is more important to you than heart rate data, you can probably get decent step count by putting tracker in your pocket, or in bra off band, during such activities.

Another common situation the above also applies to is holding hand rail walking on treadmill.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

Hi @Erinamy ,

Welcome to the community. I personally have found that my steps aren't as accurate if I'm not moving my arms, for example pushing a cart, but you will still get some steps. The way I look at it, it all evens out over the course of a day. I may be sitting at my desk, but moving my arms (clapping or some similar action), which ends up adding steps, so if I get a few less during other activities, it's got to be close to balancing. It's all about the intent and motivation to move.

I hope that helps.
